I’m not sure I ever said it in those words exactly, and I don’t even want to guess at the true answer. But there are some related observations I’m fairly sure of.
There are more men doing PE now than ever before because the knowledge is more accessible. And the knowledge base is better, more expansive.
Goals and ideals have shifted smaller over time. 8x6 used to be considered ideal. 9x7 used to be considered a normal and acceptable goal Now it’s often 7.5x5.5. Less guys are going for “as big as possible” these days. More information has come out that going beyond 8x6 is too big for many women.
Fewer big routines, and fewer innovative routines now. In the past guys were pioneering the practice of PE, making their own equipment, doing PE for several hours per day, actively analyzing the science and application. The spirit of adventure and discovery helps us push on, whereas doing something by rote can get boring.
Seemed like in the past guys were generally more proud of their PE, less ashamed, more willing to to do big routines as a result. What used to be viewed as positive dedication has shifted somewhat to be viewed as a negative obsession.
There is less privacy these days than there was 15 years ago due to the proliferation of cell phones and social media. Big routines are tougher to hide. It’s harder to stealth PE. It’s harder to privately share one’s progress online if they are stealth. Maybe there are a lot of big gainers out there we don’t know about.
More caution against injury nowadays than in the past. Could work both ways, less injuries mean fewer guys stop short of their goals. Also means routines are generally less aggressive.
Back in the early 2000’s, people were coming together online in concentrated groups sharing their lifelong interests. Guys who had practiced PE alone for years formed this community and shared all their personal discoveries. As the internet sprawled over the years, newbies and tourists diluted the various scenes. In other words, the average member here was more likely to be a dedicated long term PE’er who had possibly already made significant gains in the past, whereas now they are more likely to be a newcomer trying PE for the first time for a few weeks or months.
