The thing I’ve found most effective in keeping warm is layers. However, not just any layers will do. You need a layer (usually outer) that can stop the wind. Jeans work well. Since the wind cutting layer gets extremely cold, you need a central layer of insulation (cotton pyjama pants — not too thick). One final layer makes contact with the skin (long jons). This system is great for retaining heat when exposed to very fridged temperatures for extended periods. Underwear is not necessary as the long jons act like them.
The same can be applied to the top, but because of a jacket, two layers should be enough. Finally, a properly wrapped scarf and touque greatly increase warmth. As for the hands, I use my jacket pockets and don’t wear gloves, but thin gloves work wonderfully in conjunction with pockets. If you hands are out and dangling, mits, with thin gloves, work far better than gloves alone. Since shoes are generally ‘tight’ I don’t find doubling up on socks has a much larger effect than just wearing a thick single pair.
With all of these modifications, you’ll feel like you’re indoors even when walking outside on a blustery winter day without comprimising your style. I’m sure your nuts will thank you! :spin:
