measuring misunderstanding

Hi there, i have encountered a problem with measurements, on my old ruler between each inch there was there was ten segments on a new ruler i have there is 16 and yet on another i have seen 32 and 8. my maths is pretty bad so can someone explain how im suppose to understand these measurements.

One side of the ruler is usually centimeters, The other is inches. Inches are divided into fractions of 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32. It doesn’t matter which side of the ruler you use, as long as you use the same side every time. I hope this helps.

There are some rulers that break inches up into tenths of an inch. I guess it’s an attempt to marry the English and Metric system. A lame attempt that is. :)

Such a ruler is known as an engineer’s scale.

Ah, thanks. I guess you need to be an engineer to know that kind of stuff. Come to think of it I think one of the 5 billion sides of my architucture scale was set up like that. Of course that was back in high school and I have trouble remembering which drawer my socks are in. :D

I see, i understand now, i just kept thinking are tere some different kinds of inches out there, i knew of the metric and imperial standards and that they clashed but never knew how.so the inch that is divided into 16 increments, each of these is a sixteenth so if ive reached the 12 increment line that would considered 3 quaters or 3/4 right?

You surely were joking about XL, I try to keep him tuned up about once a week. It is highly addictive to pull his string, isn’t it? He doesn’t know it but when I harass him, I’m actually helping him by allowing him to increase his post count by arguing over nothing. :D

geezer, I tossed it for sake of mental sanity. There is no need to monitor 1/16 natural variations and panicking, I plan on doing this for a long long time. I measure with my hands, I’m a lifer.

I agree with Nine. Throw that ruler away. I have been measuring way too much lately. It becomes addicting. When you are new and gaining a lot, it’s all good. But when the newbie gains stop, but the measuring doesn’t, it becomes a problem.

Yes, indeed, I’m afraid I’ll never see those angles again, I had to run off and start hanging. :violin:
