PE is like Golf (newbies should read this)

PE is like golf. Golf is a game of opposites, and I would say that PE is as well.

How so you ask? The harder a person swings in golf, there is far more margin for error. When a person swings as hard as he/she can, the body has a higher percentage chance of being out of sequence. As such, the ball, once struck, if struck cleanly, can slice, hook, and/or balloon. (none of these are good in golf)

So, how does this apply to PE? Let’s think about it. The more you tense up, and TRY HARD to gain, the less gains appear. Instead of playing the PE game, the PE game plays you.

I played golf at Bandon Dunes, Oregon a few years back, and the caddie I had was watching me struggle around the course. (over swinging, being really tense and getting more and more frustrated). On the 9th hole of the original course, I hit a long drive, and I asked the caddie to pull out my 3-wood to go for the green. The caddie ignored me, and handed me a 5-wood, and said, “swing easy and enjoy the extra distance.” I did what he said, and I was putting for eagle because the ball was hit in the sweet spot.

In PE, it is now obvious to me, that we all are trying to “hit the sweet spot”. (oh shit, I know where this will go ;) (pun intended) )

So, in my opinion, PE is all about relaxing, swinging easy and ultimately, enjoying the (extra) gaining.

Paraphrased: It is not the critic who counts: The credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, who, at the best, knows the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.

And don’t take unnecessary chances.(see Jean Van de Velde)

Amen, Sonny.

That little extra “pull” or “squeeze” can be the difference between success and failure in golf, ..and in PE.

Relaxation is key, I try to make my lower half feel soft when doing stretches. By that I mean I focus my breathing and make sure nothing is tense at all when pulling on my unit. Ease into all of them slowly. Took me a while to get this programmed into my head, before I was tugging on it like I was trying to pull it off, bad idea. Lots of neg PI’s in the early parts of my PE venture when I think about it.

Yes I play golf and can appreciate this analogy, I have an awesome 5 iron due to being ‘at one’ with it I can hit it as far as my driver… which I am not at one with at all. ;)

Phil Mickelson (2006 U.S. Open @ Winged Foot)… We were standing right next to the tree he hit on 18. What a tool…

Relaxation is key with golf and PE. I’m a +2 handicap in the GHIN. I used to have a horrible attitude and I was extremely impatient. Once I straightened that out, my game got so much better. Similarly with PE, I started out impatient and developed a bad attitude. Once I relaxed and re-established my mindset and goals, I started gaining. Never thought of the two being so similar. Now I’ll be thinking about PE while I’m trying to make that 4 footer to win a match. Sheesh.

Good advice.

Gator,

That’s cool that you got to see that big titted brat blow up, when all he needed to do was chip it in the fairway, 7iron in, and 3 putt to win. I thought a lot of people would appreciate the golf analogy. :)

No. If I was going to lay claim to a UF golfer, it would be Camillo. I’m a little too young to be either.

Gator,

A 2 + handicap is what I call a “stick”. That’s some good golf. I’m an 17 + handicap. (5yrs ago I was a 34 :( )

Sonny, are you a golfer? Also, who is the dude on your avatar? I keep picturing this dude as you when you post.

How can that be I don’t drink beer while I PE? Would that mean I’d do exercises better after a few beers. :)

I’m a hacker, maybe get out 4,5 times a year. The 6 iron is the only club I feel comfortable with. I enjoy the majors, UF, and Italians, that’s the only reason I really know anything about DiMarco.

Travis Bickle(DeNiro) from Taxi Driver, a must-see movie. The Bickle character has always intrigued the hell out of me.
