If I were you, I would simply go by feel. If you are very sore, and you feel you just cannot handle it, then take a rest day. If you are just a little sore, then try to ride that fatigue, even if it is at a reduced weight. Just remember, no pain.
The best thing to remember is not to push the weight. Start low, 2.5-5 lbs., and go up slowly. You will probably get more problems by too much weight than too much time.
