Heat Application While Hanging
I’ve mentioned this before on other threads, but I’ll mention it again because I think it’s important. It seems clear from the data cited by previous posts in this thread, good solid scientific data, that connective tissue elongation is facilitated by application of heat prior to loading, application of heat during loading, and removal of heat while maintaining load to “fix” the tissue in its elongated state.
I know that folks like to use IR lamps for this purpose, but I am persuaded that this is dangerous for hangers because of the hang times involved. The data cited in previous posts on this thread, which is of very high quality (thanks to the guys who found it), says we should maintain the highest tolerable temperature. Using an IR lamp for, say, three 20 minute sets would have us exposing ourselves to the lamp radiation for 60 minutes a day. Now the vendor information that comes with IR lamps always has a warning about exposure times. Mine said: “limit exposure to not more than 20 minutes per day.” This warning is prudent because those lamps deliver not only IR (what we want), but also UV—which can damage one’s skin and actually promote cancer.
As a fix, I advocate using everyday, normal incandescent bulbs. They generate a ton of IR, because they are only about 6% efficient: about 6% of the energy consumed by the bulb results in visible light (the desired quantity) and 93% of the energy is thrown off as … heat, that is, as IR radiation. In other words, there is no UV risk with these bulbs, or we’d all have to wear sun glasses in our homes.
Use a normal bulb guys. You need a reflector though! Go to Home Depot, or some such place, and get the type of lamp that comes with a small reflector (about 8” in diameter) and that has a clamp so you can fasten it where you need it.
Believe me, I’ve been doing this with good results for months now. Even a 60W incandescent bulb with reflector will throw of more heat that you can take—you just have to control the total heating by adjusting the distance between the bulb and the target—and thus you can use it your entire hang time, without risk. They’re cheaper than IR lamps too.
Happy Hanging.
