sealing problems

Hi,

I just got my dr joels pumpset 1 and i’m having a hard time getting a good seal. I just read the post to get a perfect seal.
It’s the pump with gauge that is leaking somehow. I screwed out the gauge did some vaseline on it and put it back.

But its still leaking. Any other ideas?

Well, vaseline will do nothing for a air leak—may even make it worse. Use a teflon tape or a pipethread sealing compound. Trimming the pubes will help significantly.

I never got that good of a seal until I shaved Mr Johnston.

Works like a charm now.

But that “differential diagnosis was talking about putting vaseline where they lubricate it.

Also is the pump itself, not the tube. I can’t hold the air in it if i put it on my finger. It leaks very slow, and then a bit faster.

Did not read all of that from some time back. Vaseline is for the “O” ring. You are talking about the metal-to metal threaded nipple on the bottom of the gauge screwing into the pump. It must be sealed with the Teflon tape!. Internal parts such as “O” rings such as where the couplers screw into the cylinder that have small “O” rings. Lube and trim around your Cock for a good seal

Yea the metal to metal has that O ring. Do i have to teflon tape that part?

If so, do i have to do the same for the tube where that O ring is located?

Thanks in advance!

By the way, is that the only place it might be leaking?

Its kind of brand new, just got it yesterday, my last one broke. And today is the first use.

Post a photo of your pump…Apparently your pump is different than the common Harbor Freight variety that most guys have. Generally there is not an “O” Ring between gauge and pump. On the acrylic cylinder, there is an “O” ring which might just need to be tightened with your fingers. Do not over tighten which will compress the “O” ring and cause a blowout or thinning which will cause a big leak. However, “O” rings in the states are very common and easy to replace.

You bought a cheap plasic pump. They often have the problem you describe. My first pump was a plastic cheapie with the same problem. Try a harbor Freight pump, you can keep the tubing and cylinder from the old one.

I did the same thing… I didn’t use Vaseline but I used a grease. It messed it up even more.

What I found is that sometimes it would form a seal and sometimes it wouldn’t. Try experimenting with that and pumping it up to different levels to see if it holds. The other thing you can do is slowly release your squeeze to see if it makes a new seal and stops losing pressure.. If it acts like that then you need to clean out all the Vaseline and such from the pump mechanism and re-grease/lubricate.

Surprisingly I found WD-40 worked best… it creates a more consistent seal.

I’ll remove the vaseline and try the teflon tape. Gonna look for it tomorrow, see if that helps.

I’m not sure what you’re teflon taping because I’ve always thought teflon tape was used for forming a seal with threads of a screw and not to work with moving parts like seals and gaskets. I am so far removed from a mechanic or plumber though so if I’m wrong just flag me.

I don’t have your pump and have the harbor freight pump that was mentioned.
Brake Bleeder and Vacuum Pump Kit

Sorry Just—I can’t help you with this one. I think harborfreight will ship to Holland. They cost about $20US or about 30Euro. Shipping would probably be about 30Euro. Use the link above.

Alright, thanks guys!
