Just a thought, the last time iodine became a problem was when it was added to salt and bread. The Gov issued warnings everywhere and essentially eradicated the problem. I’m positive if lack of iodine became a problem again they would issue warning everywhere.

Be careful of the internet and it’s medical wisdom. It is possible the doctors have been seeing some signs of iodine deficiency but I’m certain we are not epidemic and for the most part we get enough.

Tell me a little more about this diet and also about this reduced carb coleslaw please. Is it already made up? Or do you buy the mix and add slaw dressing?

Ketogenic diets age great if you’re looking to burn up muscle and have a gross little pot belly when you’re done.

No thanks!

This is actually a decent way to see if you have a iodine deficiency. Swab about a half dollar circle on you leg or whatever place you want and if it is still there 24 hours later your good! If it has disappeared you need iodine. Again, you can keep using the liquid until the spot stays for more than a day.

Also, check into seaweed pills. They usually list the amount of iodine on the product. Good alternative if you can find the salt or supplements.

But do the swab test first, I wondered if I was low on iodine way back when and swabbed it on my knee and the spot slowly faded over 4 days. Which I believed means I was tanked up.

Cool. I will try that.

Actually, I have read a good bit about that. When they iodized salt, it took care of the problem. The trouble is, nutritionalists have got everyone thinking salt is evil and eradicating salt from their diet. Studies show that the in America, iodine deficiency is becoming the norm, again.

Actually, a ketosis diet, from my understanding of what it is, is actually a normal diet for the way humans are designed. Agriculture screwed us up. It was great for generating a large quantity of stable regularly attainable food, but bad for our bodies. Note that, until well after the middle ages, high grain diets were only eaten by the lowest class of society. While warriors, at the top, who needed to be healthy and hardy ate large quantities of meat and used veggies and breads as ” finishing touches” for their meals. Our bodies haven’t changed since the hunter gatherer days. We were designed to eat meat ( As the main food source. We are predators ), nuts, berries, certain veggies. We were not designed to eat grains.

Grains, in their wild form are very different, in many aspects, than domesticated grains, and were not a staple food nor were they prepared in the highly processed manner that grains are today. Processing of grains creates simple carbs. Our bodies aren’t designed to handle them. They digest very rapidly, creating insulin spikes. Sugar, including that in fruit juices, is even worse. Although, sugar, in the raw, is a far sight better than high fructose corn suryp, which is in practically everything you buy.

Proteins, on the other hand, digest very slowly, maintaining an even blood sugar level. Proteins, not carbs, are the building blocks of the body. Also, despite what nutritionalists have been brainwashing people to believe for the last number of decades, we need fats in our diets. Butter is not bad for you. Manmade margerine is. Hell, margerine wasn’t even originally concocted as a food! Notice that people keep cutting more and more animal fats from their diets, yet keep getting fatter. If you don’t eat fats, your body stockpiles them. You need fats for hair and skin quality, for metabolic reasons, and everyone knows how important omega 3 fats are. There are a lot of trace minerals and things in meat that we need. Also, plant proteins are not as complete as meat proteins.

The trouble is, now that our beef and poultry is not fed a natural diet, the large majority of meat that you get is not as good for you as it used to be. It lacks many of the nutrients and, while beef used to be high in omega3 fats, is now high in omega 6 fats. Not good. Add to this problem the facvt that the usual meat that you buy at the store came from animals pumped up on hormones to boost production values. Hormones that you get when you eat products that came from those animals. ( Gods! Humans could fuck up a wet dream! Give us good, healthy food sources and, in our greed, we turn them into crap. ) The same with eggs, which are an awesome food source, nutritionally. But, unless you eat free range chicken eggs, your eggs don’t have the nutrition levels that the eggs your ancestors ate did.

That is the problem. If you want to be healthy, eat like a cave man. But you can’t go out to eat in a restaurant or stop for a quick bite to eat on the road, and eat like a cave man. All our restaurants serve high carb meals. They inundate you with free bread, huge potatoes, fries, and what-not. Then they give you a small portion of meat, unless you pay a lot to get a big steak.

Money has a lot to do with being healthy. Free range beef, chicken, and eggs are not cheap. Getting anything more than a 6 oz steak in a restaurtant is going to cost you. Seafood and fish are expensive.

Even the fish we eat is dangerous, now….thanks to the high levels of mercury we have put in the water. And you just have to love the gov’t pushing CFL bulbs. They have mercury in them. Just what we need: more mercury being dumped in landfills to up the amout in our water sources. And that sucks because, not only is Sushi awesome, but fish is very healthy.

Well, if that is what you believe than by all means stock up on iodized salt the next time you come across it. It’s dirt cheap!

I hope you are wrong but I am certain if things get bad the Gov will step in and work to correct. I’m not one of those that think they only do behind the back evil stuff and have nothing but hidden agendas. Yes, that does happen in pockets and often boldly in public display but for the most part those serving are probably really doing their best to serve us and correct what we deem wrong. Sometimes they have to accept something potentially bad to get something potentially good. Politics!

Biggest problem is getting other citizens behind your causes. There may in fact be many who agree with your stance on CFL bulbs but if those people do not unite and petition and possible protest march, etc, etc then nothing will be done until after a problem arises.

Best bet is to get supporters and if you get enough you threaten the current local politicians that you will lose all these votes come re-election if you do not represent us NOW!

If you stand alone no one will do anything.Oh, I lose a vote? Even Ghandi had no effect until enough Indians backed his beliefs and causes.

Good Luck.

Whilst on a ketosis diet I supplement up to three times daily with a 2g of carb/30g of protein, whey protein shake; I have actually gained muscle mass whilst losing weight using a ketosis diet. Pot belly? A ketosis diet will strip your body fat % back to almost nothing if you maintain it and I assure you this will not result in a pot belly unless your internal organs have deformed in the process; infact there’s nothing better than cereals, breads and pastas for causing abdominal distension

Eat what you like, but keep your daily carb consumption to under 25g - this is enough to induce Ketosis for me (tested with a urinal analysis stick) the weight drops off at a phenomenal rate.

A lot of people follow the “atkin’s diet” which purports the consumption of fatty, high protein low carb food to induce ketosis; a much healthier alternative is to consume protein in the form of egg whites, poultry, and fish (watch your mercury intake when eating a lot of fish) and finally as I mentioned: whey protein. Coleslaw is pre-packed in a supermarket and works out at about 4g of carbs per serving; I tend to mix this with mozzarella (0.1g of carbs per serving) to form a filling low carb side dish.

Glut4 receptors:

Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) found in green tea has been shown to activate glut4 transportation (relocating the glut4 gateways to the surface of cells)

There’s a few others which I can’t think of off the top of my head, also, a few minutes of exercise (3-4) shortly before eating and again two hours afterwards increases glut4 activity and significantly offsets the calorific intake of meals.

Enjoy.

That was a great read…back in 2000.
Today’s logical approach to the ketosis/Atkins diet is to tread with caution. This is because not only is it harder on your kidneys but long term followers are actually undernourished and often dehydrated because of the frequent urination and the enzyme PYY which comes from protein and creates a feeling of sateity allowing people to eat far less for longer than what is considered healthy.

It gets worse, while some are able to gain a pound or two due to many factors but mainly under trained individuals exercising for the first time. For others the advanced fat burning effects are short lived as muscle begins being used for fuel. When at this time lipid levels fall from more that three days of extremely low carb consumption metabolism grinds to a hault.

Those that aren’t extremely careful will lose muscle and end up smaller but still chubby versions of their selves.

Oh yeah! And KETONES ARE TOXIC TO THE BRAIN! so have fun with brainfog and headaches.

Actually, you should eat the yolks, too. The largest amount of nutrician is in the yolk. The whole cut out the yolk thing is a thing of the past. New studies have totally changed many nutritionists ideas about eggs.

I suggest you do a little more research before presenting misleading and uninformed conjecture:

"Much harder on your kidneys":

Healthy kidneys are able to deal with high protein intake with zero negative consequences; furthermore - my gram per day protein intake remains more or less unaltered throughout ketosis and instead fat and low-carb vegetable intake is increased.

http://ndt.oxfo rdjournals.org/ … t/20/3/657.full

http://articles .latimes.com/20 … idneys-20110421

I’m not certain where you derived that information from, but apart from a slight increased risk of kidney stones in long-term use (easily corrected with dietary additions) There really isn’t anything to support your claim.

"PYY which comes from protein and creates a feeling of sateity allowing people to eat far less for longer than what is considered healthy."

And this is why you make sure your diet remains healthy and balanced throughout the ketosis period, there’s no direct danger of increased PYY levels.

"For others the advanced fat burning effects are short lived as muscle begins being used for fuel."

Body composition and hormonal responses to a carbohydrate-restricted diet - PubMed opening line: "The few studies that have examined body composition after a carbohydrate-restricted diet have reported enhanced fat loss and preservation of lean body mass in obese individuals."

and ending: "Thus, we conclude that a carbohydrate-restricted diet resulted in a significant reduction in fat mass and a concomitant increase in lean body mass in normal-weight men, which may be partially mediated by the reduction in circulating insulin concentrations." That also deals with lipid level point.

"Those that aren’t extremely careful will lose muscle and end up smaller but still chubby versions of their selves," - clearly not.

"Oh yeah! And KETONES ARE TOXIC TO THE BRAIN! so have fun with brainfog and headaches."

Neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory activities of ketogenic diet on MPTP-induced neurotoxicity - PubMed titled: "Neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory activities of ketogenic diet on MPTP-induced neurotoxicity."

"Glutamate has several fates, rather like our old buddy tryptophan. It can become GABA (inhibitory), or aspartate (excitatory and, in excess, neurotoxic). Ketogenic diets seem to favor glutamate becoming GABA rather than aspartate."

"Except here’s the dirty little secret about glucose - when you look at the amount of garbage leftover in the mitochondria, it is actually less efficient to make ATP from glucose than it is to make ATP from ketone bodies!"

Taken from: Your Brain on Ketones | Psychology Today

Ketoacidosis is rarely seen in young children who use ketosis diet long-term to control their epilepsy, perhaps you got ketosis/ketoacidosis confused.

"That was a great read… back in 2000" - sucks you had to mock me.

Devil,

I agree, as long as you don’t have a medical condition where dietary cholesterol has to be limited or not eaten at all, eat the whole egg.

I also agree on the over hyping of salt is bad but the sad fact is, did you not say you can not find salt with added iodine in your area? If so, it makes no difference if you eat the salt on hand or not.

Yes if you have high blood pressure follow Doc’s advice about salt. But, if things are not working as he predicted and you have done what you are supposed to have done, know this. When your salt consumption goes down your renin levels rise. What happens when your renin levels rise?
High blood pressure!

I know this is off topic, but just a temporary tangent:

You mean the government that let Pearl Harbor get bombed so they could get us in a war they promised they wouldn’t get involved in? The one that set off nuclear devices in the desert and used our own soldiers as guinea pigs to see how radiation effects the human body? The one that placed suit cases with syphillis in subways and bus stations in impoverished areas to see what would happen if it got loose in the population? The one that secretly tested LSD and other drugs on it’s employees? The one that denies the harmful effects of Agent Orange? The one that lets industrial fat cats put hormone mimicking chemicals in our food and beauty products? The one that just gave millions to Islamic countries that hate us and would love to destroy us and our way of life, while our own country is in economic crisis? The one that has our soldiers fighting, in Libya, in support of rebels that are the same Al Quaida that flew jets into the twin towers?

That goverment? I just want to be sure we are talking about the same government.

Seriously? Are you aware that there are watchgroups fighting to get hormone mimicking chemicals out of our products, and have been for some time? Hasn’t worked too well, has it?

That didn’t work out too well for motorcycle riders in this state. That’s for sure. We fought, protested, petitioned, wrote letters to our officials. We made it clear they needed to let those who ride decide. We have had a helmet law here,

Wow Sophomoric, I was going to reply to that post, too, but no need now. Brilliant post, man.
