Actually, a ketosis diet, from my understanding of what it is, is actually a normal diet for the way humans are designed. Agriculture screwed us up. It was great for generating a large quantity of stable regularly attainable food, but bad for our bodies. Note that, until well after the middle ages, high grain diets were only eaten by the lowest class of society. While warriors, at the top, who needed to be healthy and hardy ate large quantities of meat and used veggies and breads as ” finishing touches” for their meals. Our bodies haven’t changed since the hunter gatherer days. We were designed to eat meat ( As the main food source. We are predators ), nuts, berries, certain veggies. We were not designed to eat grains.
Grains, in their wild form are very different, in many aspects, than domesticated grains, and were not a staple food nor were they prepared in the highly processed manner that grains are today. Processing of grains creates simple carbs. Our bodies aren’t designed to handle them. They digest very rapidly, creating insulin spikes. Sugar, including that in fruit juices, is even worse. Although, sugar, in the raw, is a far sight better than high fructose corn suryp, which is in practically everything you buy.
Proteins, on the other hand, digest very slowly, maintaining an even blood sugar level. Proteins, not carbs, are the building blocks of the body. Also, despite what nutritionalists have been brainwashing people to believe for the last number of decades, we need fats in our diets. Butter is not bad for you. Manmade margerine is. Hell, margerine wasn’t even originally concocted as a food! Notice that people keep cutting more and more animal fats from their diets, yet keep getting fatter. If you don’t eat fats, your body stockpiles them. You need fats for hair and skin quality, for metabolic reasons, and everyone knows how important omega 3 fats are. There are a lot of trace minerals and things in meat that we need. Also, plant proteins are not as complete as meat proteins.
The trouble is, now that our beef and poultry is not fed a natural diet, the large majority of meat that you get is not as good for you as it used to be. It lacks many of the nutrients and, while beef used to be high in omega3 fats, is now high in omega 6 fats. Not good. Add to this problem the facvt that the usual meat that you buy at the store came from animals pumped up on hormones to boost production values. Hormones that you get when you eat products that came from those animals. ( Gods! Humans could fuck up a wet dream! Give us good, healthy food sources and, in our greed, we turn them into crap. ) The same with eggs, which are an awesome food source, nutritionally. But, unless you eat free range chicken eggs, your eggs don’t have the nutrition levels that the eggs your ancestors ate did.
That is the problem. If you want to be healthy, eat like a cave man. But you can’t go out to eat in a restaurant or stop for a quick bite to eat on the road, and eat like a cave man. All our restaurants serve high carb meals. They inundate you with free bread, huge potatoes, fries, and what-not. Then they give you a small portion of meat, unless you pay a lot to get a big steak.
Money has a lot to do with being healthy. Free range beef, chicken, and eggs are not cheap. Getting anything more than a 6 oz steak in a restaurtant is going to cost you. Seafood and fish are expensive.
Even the fish we eat is dangerous, now….thanks to the high levels of mercury we have put in the water. And you just have to love the gov’t pushing CFL bulbs. They have mercury in them. Just what we need: more mercury being dumped in landfills to up the amout in our water sources. And that sucks because, not only is Sushi awesome, but fish is very healthy.
