Saw Palmetto

I thought the main benefit in taking Saw Palmetto was in reducing the size of an enlarged prostate. At least, that is what I take it for and it has given me relief in that area.

I take it for the same reason, i.e. prostate health, and it’s worked great.

If im correct in my thinking saw palmetto attaches itself to DHT receptors.

I take saw palmetto for my hair loss in conjunction with propecia and minoxidil

I was not aware that saw palmetto was good for hair loss.I have a spot on top of me head that’s going bald and I use a product called Nioxin, which is a liquid topical much like Rogaine.I should get some saw palmetto and see if that doesn’t give the Nioxin a boost.

It’s not. It was thought that it was (or at least supplements with 85-95% standardized extract) because it has a similar effect as finesteride did with an enlarged prostate. Many studies have been done and it showed to have absolutely no effect on hairloss.

Nioxin will do NOTHING for your hairloss, and saw palmetto, while helpful to reduce prostate swelling, does little for hairloss too.

If you want to get rid of your bald spot use:

-Propecia
-Minoxidil
-Nizoral

If you don’t want to take something internal that will alter your hormones, then use:

-5% Spironolactone cream (applied to a HYDRATED scalp)
-Nizoral 2%
-Minoxidil

"Look what your brother did to the door!"

Leatherface, have you tried this technique? If so how successful was it? I am not adverse to taking internals. If you could please outline your treatment program? Thanks .

If you’re not adverse to taking internals, then definitely go with Propecia. In fact, I recommend starting with only Propecia every day and Nizoral Shampoo 2-3 times a week (leave it on for 5 minutes then rinse)

Give this a year, and if after that you haven’t achieved the regrowth you want, then add minoxidil.

Good luck, and be prepared to shed a little bit in the beginning of treatment. Don’t panic and ride the shed out as this is usually a sign that you are responding to treatment.

"Look what your brother did to the door!"

I’ve been on Propecia, Minox 5% and Nizoral 2% for 3 1/2 years now and it was the best move I could have ever made.

BTW, Leatherface, your avatar rules!

Thanks tmar89. Glad your hair is doing good!

Thanks Leatherface! And thanks to you as well tmar89.I’m not familiar with Nizoral,do I have to get it by prescription? Also are you getting Propecia from your doc or is the generic from say kits-n-more alright?Sorry for all the questions ,but I’m 40,look young for my age, have long hair and play in a classic rock band. This bald spot is not at all the look I was going for if you know what I mean.

There are some folks who feel that the generics are less potent than MErck brand Finasteride, but then there are others who swear buy it. My personal hunch is that they are probably fine, but it is about piece of mind. If you’re in a good financial situation then go with the name brand.

Do you have health insurance? If so, then you can ask your doctor to write you a prescription for Proscar. Proscar is the same active ingredient as Propecia, however it comes in 5 mg pills as opposed to the 1 mg pills that Propecia comes in. What MANY people do to save money is take one 5 mg Proscar pill and split it into 4ths with a pill cutter and take 1.25 mg a day.
Many people do this and it is just as effective as taking Propecia, only cheaper.

Nizoral comes in two strengths: 1% and 2%. The 2% is the big gun however it DOES require a prescription, BUT you can order it online without a prescritpion at https://www.nizoralshampoo.com .

Re: Minoxidil. You will find that brand name minoxidil is a greasy mess and takes forever to dry. Many folks like to order Minoxidil from Dr. Lee at 15% HIGH STRENGTH Minoxidil Hair Loss Products because it has a higher alcohol content and dries very quickly. In order to place an order with Dr. Lee you need to fill out on online consultation and pay a one time fee of $20, but it’s worth it cuz his products are great. He can also send you a prescription for Proscar that you can get filled at any pharmacy.

Good luck!!

It would be very tough to find a doctor that would prescribe Proscar for hairloss but I know it can be done. I take Fincar (generic Proscar) and it is cheap! I also buy Minoxidil from Costco which is also cheap. Every few days I use a 2% zinc based shampoo. Head and Shoulders is 1% zinc and helps also. T-gel, T-sal, etc are nice now and then. I was a diffuser and lost a good share of hair in college. After a few years of treatment, I don’t look like I’m losing hair. It’s definitely not as thick as when I was younger but it looks pretty good now. If you really want a good database of hairloss knowledge, go to hairlosstalk.com. You will find out everything you want to know in the forums.

Thanks Leatherface and thanks to you to Gut Scrambler.I will definitely be talking to my doc about the Proscar, and also thanks for the link to the hairlosstalk.I am indebted to both of you.
