Hair loss - anything to reverse it or prevent it? Is hair transplantation an option?

Hair loss - anything to reverse it or prevent it? Is hair transplantation an option?

Hi all,

At the age of 33, I find that my hair line is receding. My hair is mostly pretty thick, but I get what I think might be called the horseshoe pattern.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent further hair loss or even reverse it?

Is hair transplation an option? My hair dresser said no.

For now, I’m just trying to be careful whenever I wash my hair and comb it, not using excessive force. Not sure if it matters, but I will be more careful.

Thanks in advance. :)

Renholder

Combing or brushing your hair has nothing to do with it. As far as I know, Propecia and Rogaine are the only things that are proven to work.

They work only for hair loss prevention or may they also reverse it?

It might be a minority of cases, but I’ve heard they can have some nasty side effects, including ED.

Hi Renholder

I am afraid there is, part from the already mentioned drugs and snakeoil, not much you can do. And yes, the drugs may have side effects. Is it worth?

For once, I advocate against body modification. The hair is a permanent part of the visible personality. My Lady, who has experience in the cosmetic/esthetic field, explained to me years ago that modifying the hair is quickly “visually unbalanced”. This means that if your hair looks much younger than your face it’s noticed very easily and looks a bit disturbing. Since then, I pay attention to other men scalps and can confirm the theory.

We had to put theory into practice with her son who developed serious hair loss before his 20th birthday. He decided to go the “Bruce Willis lane” and had it short, very short and since 24 he keeps his head entirely bald. It suits him and until now, he can’t complain about negative reactions. Au contraire, women tend to link baldness to high testosterone levels :-)

My lady had her hair always tainted deep black. Since several years, the grey patches are getting bigger and bigger. She had decuded at the age of 48 that she will not colour her hair anymore but stay gray and carry it with dignity. Personally, I find it quite sexy!

Maybe these thoughts help. Not everybody has the courage to look like the actual president of the United States…. (not a political, but a visual statement!)

If you take a trip over the the long hair forum online, find out what type of hair you have and then you will be able to get a lot more information from those guys and girls. I have been in there a long time but only really cared about growing my own hair type.

What I can recommend for sure, is the following

Nettle tea, often, but at least 3 times a day.

Brushing does aid in stimulating the scalp, which causes growth. Get the best brush possible, I use a tangle teaser.

Oils which cause a tingle do the same thing. Teatree, mint etc.

Deep conditioning hair masks such as avacado and coconut milk make a huge difference to the quality of the hair, not sure about growth on this aspect though. However, better quality means stronger in most cases.

Sitting upside down and massaging the scalp, even without the oils also aids the scalp and hair. Does this for five minutes before bed.

Your hair dresser is wrong that a hair transplant isn’t an option, I had 2000 grafts done about 3yrs ago and it looks perfectly natural only issue is now my hair has continued to recede behind my transplanted hair so I’m needing it done again to fill in those areas but I antacipated that anyway, the point will come that I won’t have enough doner hair to supply the thinning areas but I’m banking by then there’ll either be something new available or I wont care so much as I’ll be older, that’s the hope anyway.

Appreciate this.

Do you have any actual experience reducing or growing back hair with these techniques?

Nice.

Do you need to stay on medicine after a hair transplant?

I think what’s happened to you is exactly what my hair dresser had concerns about, i.e., hair receding BEHIND your implanted hair. I saw another guy on a coffee shop just recently which seemed to have the same thing. I wondered if it were due to hair transplants. Or maybe that was simply HIS pattern.

Anyway, due to this, I’ve considered probably waiting a year or two before I do anything.

I’m trying to look at older pictures of myself and it seems like I’ve had my current pattern (little hair on temples) perhaps most of my adult life. It IS less now, but perhaps not as much as I thought/feared at first. Always had a high hairline, I guess.

There’s some interesting anecdotal info out there about not shampooing one’s hair - only washing it with water as it were. Then idea is that for millennia we didn’t use shampoos and that our scalps tend to respond negatively to the chemical bath in which we’re bathing our hair follicles. I’ve not used shampoo for several years and can’t say for sure that it stopped my hair loss but at minimum it’s an interesting coincidence that my hair loss stopped when I abandoned shampoos and conditioners.

I had the same problem, instead of looking like a chemo patient or having a comb over, I decided to shave it. I look a bit more serious, but I truly believe this is the best answer.

Appreciate the input, gentlemen.

Rogaine just gives you an offset of growth, it does not treat the underlying cause and everything you gain (and a little bit more) falls out within a month of you stopping treatment.

Finasteride is a bad idea in every way. Messing with those hormones will bite you in the ass for years to come.

A new treatment is currently in phase 2 of FDA trials, it is called Breezula. You can currently source it from some private hair loss forums but it will cost you up to $500 per month. It does work though.

Anyone use RU58841? How does it compare to the Rogaine or Propecia? How about Avodart (Dutasteride)?

I realize it’s not what you’re asking, but finasteride (generic Propecia) has fortunately for me not had any negative side effects that I can tell, other than watery semen which has been improving over time. I just turned 49, and I have no problems achieving hard erections and relatively short refractory periods. I do try to take care of myself by eating healthy as much as possible, and weight training and doing moderate amounts of cardio. I feel horny as ever. This does not mean it may have other effects on others, as we’re all different. I too have used 5% liquid minoxidil (generic Rogaine) for over 15 years, and prior to switching to finasteride, I used Saw Palmetto. I previously used Propecia in my early 30’s, and that stuff worked like magic with zero side effects. At the time it was too expensive for me so I stopped using it. I now wish I hadn’t.

Interesting. How does it work? Does it stop hairloss or does it reverse it?

Ergo-Log.com has info. Go to their search bar and type in ‘hair loss’.
