Girls more into sex toys than boys?
The other night I was browsing in a large lingerie/sex novelties shop located in a somewhat bohemian section of my city. By “bohemian” I mean that there are various coffee shops, tattoo and piercing parlors, a gypsy fortune teller, etc., mixed in with some other more traditional businesses. The area is frequented by
young people, especially Goths and others with alternative lifestyles. This
lingerie/sex novelties shop has it all and caters to everyone (not just the Goths
and dyed hair crowd that works there): lingerie, swimwear, slinky outfits, pasties
for strippers or wannabes, shoes and boots with impossibly high soles and heels
(6 to 8 inches), sex gag gifts and novelties, bong pipes and other similar
paraphernalia, a tattoo and piercing parlor on the premises, and a selection of sex
toys and B&D gear.
As I wandered through the store, I noticed that a young woman (early 20s) was
there with her boyfriend (also early 20s). She was looking at the shoes and boots
and discussing how she could fit a pair of boots into her budget. It was obvious
that coming to the store had been her idea. She was not skinny enough to be an
exotic dancer/stripper—the only ready market I know of for this kind of footwear.
I then moved on another part of the store. Just after I had entered the sex toys
and B&D gear section of the store, she dragged her boyfriend in and excitedly
began examining various sex toys and devices. She was obviously way more into
this stuff than was her boyfriend. She looked at various inflatable dolls replicating
female porn stars, dildoes, vibrators and various cyberskin vaginas and dildoes
shaped in the likeness of porn stars, commenting on each one to her boyfriend.
When I wandered out, she was playfully slapping her boyfriend with a leather
paddle.
Needless to say, at age 44, I felt a serious generation gap. Is this a new trend
among young people—that women have as big or greater appetite for
pornography and things related to the kinky side of life? I can’t imagine someone
from my generation acting this way while in their twenties. Most women I know
from my generation would be embarrassed to go in a store of this kind. It seems
to me that time have changed. I’d like to get other takes on this phenomenon.
