Hormone test results - opinions please guys.

Hormone test results - opinions please guys.

Hey guys,

I recently got a hormone test done (to basically support a friend who’s having some difficulties due to screwed up hormone levels). Here’s the results:-

1. Testosterone - 88pg/ml - (reference range for my age is 64-200 pg/ml) (I’m 30)
2. Estrogen - 2.6pg/ml - (reference range for my age is 0.2-3.4 pg/ml)
3. DHEA - 850pg/ml - (reference range for my age is 290-880 pg/ml)

4. Cortisol (4 readings taken throughout the day of) -

2.7 pg/ml (7.00 am) - (reference range for my age is 1.5 - 15 pg/ml)
0.7 pg/ml (noon) - (reference range for my age is 0.3 - 5 pg/ml)
0.9 pg/ml (6 pm) - (reference range for my age is 0.3 - 5 pg/ml)
0.2 pg/ml (midnight) - (reference range for my age is 0.2 - 2.5 pg/ml)

What do you think?

I’m concerned about -

1. Although the testosterone is within the ‘norm’ - it seems on the low side - what do you think?
2. Estrogen is within the ‘norm’ - but seems a little on the high side - what do you think?
3. DHEA is within the norm, but seems very high - what do you think?
4. Cortisol is within the norm, but seems low at each of the 4 times - what do you think?

What are your overall insights? Anything I should consult my doc on?

Thanks as always guys

Did your doctor get a copy of these results, or did you have these tests done independently such that he would not see them?

If he saw them, what did he say?

Hey avocet, I got the test done by an independent lab in thje UK, purely to support a friend who is having lots of hormone based tests done at present. My doc has no knowledge of my results yet. Do you see any problems in my results? Do I need to consulot my doc?

Thanks
WI

Everything is within norms, so no real worries there.

1. & 2. You could google on “balance testosterone estrogen” or something like that to increase testosterone (lift heavy weights, diet?)…
3. On quick google search apparently DHEA is good!
4. again google, but I have a feeling that less cortisol is good.

But hey, I’m no expert :D .

I think that if you are concerned enough to ask us what we think, you are concerned enough to take the results to your doctor and ask him or her to interpret them to put you at ease.

sunny A day without sunshine is like a day without laughter :sun:

Let a doctor take a look at the findings to be sure there is anything that needs to be done.

Doctors for the most part are highly ignorant of this stuff. For example, testosterone and estrogen can be in the normal range, but quite frankly, normal range includes guys who are suffering from ED. Or they might give testosterone, but forget that it will be converted to estrogen (unless an estrogen inhibitor is also prescribed).

Of course, I am speaking of US doctors. It might be different in the UK.

You need to go to a specialist like an endocrinologist to get a better interpretation of these lab results.

For example a GP may take a thyroid function test but say you read at the low end of normal. Yet you may exhibit some or all the symptoms of hypothyroid disease.

ED, low libido, fatigue, appetite loss but gaining adipose deposits (getting fat). Memory loss and dry skin. Cold feet and hands, constant thirst. A gp may say your thyroid is fine but an endocrinologist may put you on low dose thyroid hormone replacement.

I agree with kingpole — take the lab results to your doctor. If necessary he will refer you to a specialist. Your testosterone is "low normal" and your estrogen is "high-ish normal." At the very least you need to make your doctor aware of your labs. That way the two of you can keep track of it — you will want to be on top of things should your testosterone levels drop lower.

This may be nothing to worry about — are you having the symptoms of low testosterone?

Here’s the standard pre-diagnostic questionnaire about the symptoms of low testosterone. It is called the ADAM test. Stands for Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male. Take it and print it out to bring to your doctor:

Depending on what happens with the doctor, I also wanted to point you to a good article on increasing testosterone levels naturally:

Build Muscle and Gain Weight Fast | Muscle Gain Guide

The author gives 10 ways to naturally increase testosterone levels. The first three things on his list are exercise related — so if you workout, check them out. If yo don’t work out, consider starting because it will help you.

Quote
4) Increase your EFA consumption. Essential Fatty Acids from sources such as peanuts, avocadoes, fish and healthy oils like flax seed, olive and canola are a great way to naturally boost testosterone levels.

5) Reduce your intake of soy. Soy protein raises the body’s levels of estrogen (the main female hormone) and this has a direct negative effect on testosterone levels.

6) Limit your consumption of alcohol. Alcohol has been shown to have quite a dramatic effect on testosterone levels, so try to limit your "binge drinking" nights and keep your alcohol consumption in moderation.

7) Increase your dietary intake of cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, turnips, cabbage and Brussels sprouts have all been shown to dramatically reduce estrogen levels, thereby raising testosterone.

8) Lower your daily stress levels. Being overly stressed stimulates the release of “cortisol”, a highly catabolic hormone that will cause your testosterone levels to plummet.

9) Increase your sexual activity. Sexual stimulation causes the body to increase the production of oxytocin which increases endorphin production (the "feel-good" chemical), and this also raises testosterone.

10) Make sure to get adequate sleep every night. A lack of sleep contributes to cortisol production, and this will lower your testosterone levels.

Here’s what most U.S Docs, even endicrinologists will do, if this much. They will put you on some testosterone supplement. You will be fine for a short while and then it will aromatase into Estrogen and which time you libido, mood, etc will sink.

Now maybe it’s different in the UK and maybe you will come upon a good endocrinologist but many people have experienced the above. Just keep this in mind and DONT PUT 100 percent FAITH in doctors, as everyone else on this thread seems to indicate.

Estrogen dominant.

There are other boards where this is discussed in depth and guys who have dealt with this successfully (and legally) share helpful info. PM me if you wish.
