I think the big problem lots of the Taoist sites have with Chia is that Chia is many Western people’s first contact with Taoist principles. If they are ‘serious’ Taoist sites, they would probably rather be discussing the Tao Te Ching or deeper philosophical principles, rather than have people find their sites through an interest in Chia’s work. To them, studying Taoism is about far more important matters than just having better sex, so it’s understandable that they are concerned that the Western world’s perception of Taoism is perhaps overly strongly influenced by Chia.
Laying Taoism aside, and returning to the nei gong/Qi Gong perspective, as I’ve mentioned above, Chia’s work is a small part of the whole. It’s a bit like going to the gym and spending an hour a day working on just your biceps. Naturally, your biceps will improve, but it would be far better to work your entire body and, when you have a firm foundation in weight training and your whole body is strong, spend a little extra time on your biceps.
I think there is also a strong feeling amongst many Qi Gong practitioners that Chia wrote his books more to make money than to pass on valuable knowledge and that he tends to only present what he thinks people want to read. I don’t think there is anything intrinsically wrong with that; all knowledge is useful; but I think it needs to be looked at for what it is. Having said that, I haven’t read any of his books for some time, and my own knowledge has moved on since. Maybe I should re-read them and see what I think of them now.
