I could be off base here … but let me share my assessment first and then explain my reasoning.
I suspect that you are over-thinking this and that you should start doing the newbie routine with a greater degree of consistency.
My understanding is that you have lost about a quarter inch in length in the past couple months. During that time, you have been doing some “casual” PE … but it doesn’t sound like you are taking it all that seriously. Understandable … I think that we’ve all been there. I haven’t heard that you are suffering from any pain or other ill effects other than your perceived loss of length.
So the question is: where did this quarter inch swing come from? I suspect that it is a combination of the following:
1. As small percentage is probably measurement technique. Under the best circumstances, we are all taking some fairly inaccurate measurements of ourselves. We stand there holding our frequently uncooperative dicks in one hand press a ruler against our pelvis with the other and look at a line on the ruler from 3 feet away and try and make an unbiased judgement as to the measurement. Under the best circumstances, our measurements are less than scientific.
2. We are all more obsessed with our dicks than the average joe-on-the-street and our level of obsession probably goes up and down from month to month. It could be that your state of mind is having some impact on your EQ or your level of relaxation is impacting your erection.
3. Frequency of masturbation could most definitely be a factor
4. I can’t tell from what you have reported, but your casual routine might have been more “casual” than you think and you have lost some previous gains form when you were “less casual” earlier in the year.
5. Some other factor that none of us have seen or thought to ask about.
The bottom line is that it doesn’t sound like you have injured yourself or that there are warning signs that are acutely worrisome.
If you do the newbie routine “non-casually” then you will remove some of the variables and in a month or so you will be in a position to make a more informed assessment.
