Anyone know of a good ruler that doesn’t have that annoying mm or so of lead before it actually starts measuring? Any amazon links?

Dude save your money. Just measure that space and add it back to whatever your measurement is. Get a piece of paper and mark the edge of the ruler and the 0 mark of the ruler, then slide the ruler over and measure it.
Another option is to find an online ruler, print it out and glue it to your existing ruler or a board. You may need to print a couple to get the size just right. This is a good option when you need a metric cm/mm ruler and only have sae ruler.

Current: 7-7/8” BPEL; 7-3/8” NBPEL; 8.5” BPFSL; 6.5” MEG; 6”x5” Flaccid.

Also, depending on the material, cut it off. For a plastic ruler, I scored the back of the ruler several times with a plexiglass scoring tool (or use a dull utility knife) and snapped it off. Smooth edges and corners with 320-grit paper.
Another option would be to use something you can mark and then measure that.
Rulers do make the best progress report pictures though.

I donhave a dremel tool. Didn’t even think about that. I’ll just buy a thick plastic ruler next time I’m at the store

I use a tailor’s tape.
It works well enough for length and it’s the absolute best for girth measurement.
I always measure in metric and then convert to imperial later to keep me honest (cuz my dumb American brain doesn’t remember metric measurements)
I cut that area off with a hacksaw in my mitre box!

I use a wooden yardstick I bought at Lowes for about $1. Cut it off to 9”, printed out a metric ruler and glued it on. Metric on one side, sae on the other. There ya go. Comfort and function.
