In his original article about the exercise (which at the time was only for women), Dr. Kegel did not suggest how long to hold each contraction. Based on his use of a vaginal manometer, which measured the strength of each squeeze, I took it to be just a simple contract and release repeated, as he suggested, for twenty minutes three times a day.
You can find a variety of suggestions on the Internet (search for “Kegels men”). I suggest 50-100 a couple times a day. Many guys do them on their way to work.

The point of the exercise in men is to tone up the bulbocavernosus muscle. To do that you just have to get it used to contracting. I don’t think there’s any additional benefit from holding the squeeze. Others may have a different opinion (let’s hope they join the thread).

Actually it isn’t the same muscle. The urinary sphincter must be contracted to open it and allow urine to flow. It closes when you stop contracting. The BC is used when you squirt that last bit of urine out as you try to clear the urethra. Stopping your urine flow may contract the BC at the same time, but it isn’t necessary. You can get enough exercise by doing a couple hundred Kegels during the rest of the day.
