Overcoming the urge to measure
Since starting PE I’ve had an overwhelming urge to measure to see if I’ve gained. It started as a daily thing. I quickly realized that measuring daily was an exercise in futility and forced myself to wait at least a week in between measurements. Almost like a weekly weigh in. After the first month I thought I was looking bigger and measured again. Now I’m almost done with my second month. I still feel like I look larger but am restraining from measuring. One of the most important things I realized was the math of PE. Most people say it takes a year to gain about an inch. One inch = 2.54 centimeters. Spread out 2.54 centimeters over 12 months and you’re looking at gains of approximately 0.21 centimeters per month. That’s 5 months to see a centimeter of difference.
To me, measuring repeatedly looks like the bane of PE. If you’re looking for short term gains, you aren’t going to see them. All that will happen is you see very small differences and get discouraged. I don’t want to fall into the “I tried this for 3 months and nothing happened” camp, so I’m holding off measuring until November unless I see a huge difference in my appearance. One of things I’ve noticed though is that as I’ve continued to follow the routine, I do it more for habit/pleasure than I do for the potential gains. I’m hoping that by staying in the habit and finding ways to stay motivated maybe I’ll actually see the difference 4 months from now.
This has been kinda of an observation/statement/update thread, but I hope it sparks some thought for other newbies like me.
