That is what I do. I make the rounds twice: up, down. Right, left. Occasionally, I will do one regular set like that and then I will do diagonal stretches: down to the right, down to the left, up to the right, up to the left, straight out. I think you get the idea.
Some of the stretches I like the best are called “cranks”. The idea here is to get a good grip (with a piece of toilet paper) and pull straight out for a few seconds. Once you can feel a good stretch in the ligs then crank your member like you are mixing a bowl of cake batter. I do this kinda slowly and get 30 full revolutions before I let go and rest. One set of cranks takes me about 60 seconds. Keep an eye on your glans though, you can get red spots if you squeeze to hard.
By far the best stretch for me, however, is when I twist my flaccid one full turn (so when you look down at your glans it is facing the proper direction but the shaft has one full twist in it). Since you are new, I would not pull very hard with this one yet. Overdoing it is a SURE way to injure yourself! These twisted stretches have a name already, I am sure, but they do a great job of straining the whole penis. I like them a lot.
I must say that warming up is important. You did not mention it, but I must warn you. I started PE thinking that warm-up was an extra step I could eliminate. After weeks with no gains and plenty on red spots, I finally came around.
Do what ever you can to make sure your effort is not wasted. Otherwise you are wasting your time as well.
Hope this helps.
