MOTIVATION?

Unconventinal rocker Warren Zevon died last sunday. He was 56.

He knew he had only months to live since last September from lung cancer yet he was able to string it out for a whole year. He was motivated to make a final album which he finished just last month to critical acclaim - although I have not heard it yet, but will buy it because I will hear his dying voice, feel his motivation, and think about what he was like in the end. He surely didn’t think he was going to finish an album in 11 months when he was diagnosed last year BUT HE FUCKING DID. He spent a lot of time this year with his 2 grown kids also which was nice.

I’m 43 and didn’t actively pursue sex MY ENTIRE SINGLE LIFE because I had a small dick - I’m kinda average now. My MOTIVATION for PE is to have what I never had BEFORE I DIE.

We are all dying. Most of us don’t realize this until you go “over the hill” and then it gets clearer with each passing year. I probably have the mental sexual maturity of a 20 yr. old which only clarifies the thought in my head: SHIT, I AM GETTING TOO OLD TOO FAST. I AM DYING. I WILL NEVER FUCKING PASS THIS WAY AGAIN.

Tug Monkey, I have the same problem also.

Starting is impossible, but once I am forced, I can do half a project or so before I stop for a break. And then it’s impossible to start up again :(

In fact, I am doing it right now. I am on a break that has lasted 2 hours. What have I been doing? Cleaning, mainly. Anything to keep me occupied, and keep me from doing the work I am supposed to be doing.

Why? I have no idea.

It took me a whole day just to begin this project. Now it looks like it might not get done by the end of the second day either :(

This is starting to get really strange. I usually clean my room (or anything I can get my hands on) to avoid starting a project as well. Any other brain-dead physical activiity will suffice. Washing the dishes, doing the laundry or cooking food are often procrasturbation (I love that word!).

Here's a question: How many of you procrastinate when you're supposed to be PEing?

Yeah, cleaning and organizing are good procrastinatory tools — small tasks that enable us to feel some personal efficacy and distract ourselves from the thought that we *should* be doing such-and-such. Plus they tie in with the general obsessive personality that is prone to procrastination. Another favorite method, of course, is compulsively checking email or refreshing Thunder’s Place and other sites for updates.

I don’t procrastinate PE. I’m just hanging, which is easy to do while at the computer or while reading, unless there’s skin stretch, which burns like mad and is distracting. If you find yourself procrastinating PE, you might want to try hanging, since it requires the least attention of everything. (Maybe pumping is equivalent?)

My hypothesis about the procrastination—work-momentum link seems to have been supported by this tiny sample. Don’t know what this means exactly. I suspect these two qualities could be subsumed under some unspecified higher-level construct (time for factor analysis?). Do you guys also find that you aren’t prone to severe boredom the way that some of your less procrastinatory buddies might seem to be? This seems like an obvious corollary (since you’re always finding *something, anything* to do in your environment, to put off “bigger,” more “important” projects), but sometimes the obvious is wrong.

chickenchoker: Uncles and older cousins have said similar things to me like that. You’re 100% right and I agree with your argument, but I still hold myself back even though I’m FULLY AWARE that one day my time will be running out to do the things I want to/should do instead of now where my time is limitless. Yet, I STILL continue to take things for granted and don’t take advantage of my days. A recent example is in a college class of mine there is one amazing looking girl who I wish I had the balls to talk to and confront, but I just don’t. Then I think to myself, “You’re a fuck up…you piss away all the opportunities that are not going to last and you hold yourself back for no decent reason. You’ve got to pull your shit together and do this and keep in mind you’re only going to be this young once.”

It doesn’t matter though because I still don’t do it even after pressuring myself to get things done. It’s fucking amazing how pathetic I am. :-Q

Well j384, you’re in the right place.

I think we all understand that procrastination is evil and keeps us from achieving great things.

You’ve started a good thread, and we all have a thing or two to learn about ending this trait once and for all.

If we help each other out, I’m sure we can PE and reach our goals, or mack that cute honey in lecture.

The Excel spreadsheet that I’ve been using since August 31st has an additional value, other than merely tallying totals - it helps defeat procrastination for me, because I know that I have to “fill in” those cells each day, making sure I’m on track for my weekly totals. This keeps me jelqing & stretching. Sort of like when I was a kid & I had an odometer put on my bicycle. I often rode more & more just to turn the odometer.

Sounds kind of stupid, but it works!

Good point about not getting bored ! A girlfriend used to get bored in the car at a stoplight, and we joked how I could watch paint dry or grass grow since anything is better than actually getting stuck into the work. I enjoyed reading these posts cause you know others have to deal with the same annoying stuff, and helps you realize why you do silly things yourself. The only thing that ever gets me moving is having the daily plan, and also, once you have started on something, you find you kind of enjoy it anyway.

i can relate

I feel for you. i just posted a similar story at another site i visit. i have done the same over the past year. for me it started with the notion of rest days ( taking time off ) to better your gaines. this was after reading about it in a post i think. anyway, it soon led to being lazy, making excuses to myself etc. doing other things with my time. i too suffer the same type of lack of motivation, laziness, pre-occupation with other things, whatever you want to call it. in my case i think it may boil down to O.C.D. ( obsessive compusive disease). i find that when i persued a goal ( looking back ) i can see a pattern of similar behavior even in other things i have done. something along the way triggered the downfall. it is much harder to stay focused on the goals set when new things crop up that have your immediate attention. i too search for the “cure” to my problem. it always seems an uphill battle to stay motivated. even with the 1 inch gain in lenght and 3/4 inch girth gains i have made, you would think that this in itself would be enough motivation. i struggle with staying motivated every day. i am starting again today, but know, each time i stop, it gets harder to start again. this time i will set aside the time and make no excuses acceptable. treat it as if it was as necessary to life as breathing or eating. i am going to try setting up my exercise routine as a pre- meal exercise. if i don’t exercise, i don’t get that meal. a sort of reward system. i think it all comes down to self discipline and prioritizing. i never set PE goals, measured regularly, kept nothing more than my beginning stats. worst of all, it took a rude awakening to see the light. after the notice was made with my gaines (by my ex-wife) several months back. she was pleasantly suprised i might add, who incidently was the same person who also recently pointed out my losses ” are you getting smaller”….. what a blow….. she said she really liked the gaines. this in it self is what started me thinking i need to do something again and stick to it this time. make no more excuses and dedicate myself to start improving all aspects of my life.

I can relate to that at times. In my youth many people came to expect a lot from me as a result of a “Child Genius” classification and as a result of who my father was and his brilliance. (assumption of genetic inheritance) You cannot help but want to live up to those expectations and will often put off doing something for fear of failure or performing below the standard that others have come to expect of you.
The school of thoughts that broke me out of that unhealthy view was to remember that you ultimately do things for your own sense of accomplishment and not what others think or want from you. As far as procrastination and PE is concerned (or any project or worthwhile goal), you must remember that time is a very precious commodity and lets say you are 25 years old today:

IF YOU DONT start on your project— then 2 years from now you will be 27 years old with no possibility of a bigger penis!!!

However…

IF YOU DO start on your project— then 2 years from now you will STILL BE 27 years old with some possibility (which is better then none) of a bigger penis!!!

Better to start something and fail at it than it is to always wonder for the rest of your life whether or not you would have succeeded and harbor regrets for lost time or opportunity/accompolishments.

IF YOU DO FAIL—always remember thats its part of the trial and error process and as long as you learn from your mistakes and make adaptations for the next trial, you will remain on the path to success. A good case in point here is one of the greatest inventors that ever lived—Thomas Edison (inventor of the light bulb)—check out the following:

A couple of days ago I ordered “Eat that frog” written

by Brian Tracy.

I highly recommend this book if you’re interested

in overcoming procrastination.

Now I do what I should do but don´t want to do first

thing in the morning.

It´s all about establishing new habits.(it´s not easy I know!).

Thanks for the reccommend! I’m going to buy this first thing tomorrow!

I know, I know, it seems like procrastination, but the stores will be closed by the time I get to them.

You don’t know what’s missing because all the rationale in the world by our minds to yours doesn’t motivate you like the presence of AGING.

Once you begin to feel old….
…when you wake up in the night and walk on super stiff knees to the toilet and wonder when did my knees get to be this fucking stiff?
…when you wake up 3 hrs later to piss again and wonder why do I have to piss so often?
…when you take longer to piss because the stream has to negofuckingtiate its way around your prostate and you wonder when did this start?
…when you realize hey, when was the last time I got morning wood?
…when you go hiking with a heavy backpack and your legs ache and ramp up surprisingly soon
…when you can’t lift weights in the gym anymore because it takes too many days to recover from the soreness
…etc etc.

WHEN YOU FEEL OLD, YOUR BODY WILL MOTIVATE YOUR MIND.
…old = aging = death

I’m not sure how young you are ( college class ) but obviously, your body hasn’t told you yet that you’re old. FEAR kickstarts your ass better than THOUGHT.

One advice on that amazing looking girl. Don’t just look at her that way. Look at her as though she is a part of your life that you don’t want to slip away. Look at her as your very life itself, that you have a responsibility to manage because IT IS YOUR LIFE.

Meaning, look at her like let’s say your arm is laying on the floor because it somehow got severed from you. You have the inherent responsibility to walk over there and pick it up and care for it so that it can be reattached BECAUSE IT IS A PART OF YOU.

Now knowing the impact she can have on your life, she might as well be seen AS YOUR LIFE, ok?

Yeah, I could have used all this advice when I was 20. I don’t have procrastination problems anymore. ALMOST ALL SENSE OF ADVENTURE AND FRIVOLOSITY HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY FEAR.
