Sunny,

Yes, we have been able to maintain contact throughout the whole thing, and all are safe. We are originally from Baton Rouge, and that is where all of our family is. My wife and kids are staying with my parents.

We have been very fortunate. In fact, the house we are renting is vitually unscathed, and I just heard that the warehouse where we have most of our furniture and stuff we did not take to Russia is also safe and dry. In the midst of this tragedy, I have been very lucky.

Believe me, if I had not heard from them at any point, I would have been on the next plane back. I am lucky that I work for a very human company, and have been offered plane tickets, assistance, and leave if needed several times by different levels of management. This same company (which also has major operations in New Orleans, Houston, and the Gulf of Mexico) just yesterday cut a check for a few million and is matching employee donations as well for disaster relief. Their employees are manning phones in Houston and areas around New Orleans.

The Real News

The following is the result of an interview I just conducted via cell phone with a New Orleans citizen stranded at the Convention Center. I don’t know what you’re hearing in the mainstream media or in the press conferences from the city and state officials, but here is the truth:

“Bigfoot” is a bar manager and DJ on Bourbon Street, and is a local personality and icon in the city. He is a lifelong resident of the city, born and raised. He rode out the storm itself in the Iberville Projects because he knew he would be above any flood waters. Here is his story as told to me moments ago. I took notes while he talked and then I asked some questions:

Three days ago, police and national guard troops told citizens to head toward the Crescent City Connection Bridge to await transportation out of the area. The citizens trekked over to the Convention Center and waited for the buses which they were told would take them to Houston or Alabama or somewhere else, out of this area.

It’s been 3 days, and the buses have yet to appear.

Although obviously he has no exact count, he estimates more than 10,000 people are packed into and around and outside the convention center still waiting for the buses. They had no food, no water, and no medicine for the last three days, until today, when the National Guard drove over the bridge above them, and tossed out supplies over the side crashing down to the ground below. Much of the supplies were destroyed from the drop. Many people tried to catch the supplies to protect them before they hit the ground. Some offered to walk all the way around up the bridge and bring the supplies down, but any attempt to approach the police or national guard resulted in weapons being aimed at them.

There are many infants and elderly people among them, as well as many people who were injured jumping out of windows to escape flood water and the like — all of them in dire straights.

Any attempt to flag down police results in being told to get away at gunpoint. Hour after hour they watch buses pass by filled with people from other areas. Tensions are very high, and there has been at least one murder and several fights. 8 or 9 dead people have been stored in a freezer in the area, and 2 of these dead people are kids.

The people are so desperate that they’re doing anything they can think of to impress the authorities enough to bring some buses. These things include standing in single file lines with the eldery in front, women and children next; sweeping up the area and cleaning the windows and anything else that would show the people are not barbarians.

The buses never stop.

Before the supplies were pitched off the bridge today, people had to break into buildings in the area to try to find food and water for their families. There was not enough. This spurred many families to break into cars to try to escape the city. There was no police response to the auto thefts until the mob reached the rich area — Saulet Condos — once they tried to get cars from there… well then the whole swat teams began showing up with rifles pointed. Snipers got on the roof and told people to get back.

He reports that the conditions are horrendous. Heat, mosquitoes and utter misery. The smell, he says, is “horrific.”

He says it’s the slowest mandatory evacuation ever, and he wants to know why they were told to go to the Convention Center area in the first place; furthermore, he reports that many of them with cell phones have contacts willing to come rescue them, but people are not being allowed through to pick them up.

I have “Bigfoot“‘s phone number and will gladly give it to any city or state official who would like to tell him how everything is under control.

Addendum: Bigfoot just called to report that “they” (the authorities) are cleaning up the dead bodies at the Convention Center right now.

I was watching Fox a few hours back, and Geraldo was claiming there to be about 30,000 people at the convention centre at the time. It’s an unmitigated disaster; people are dropping like flies - through starvation, dehydration, and violence. It seems that only the news agencies have their wits about them and know what’s going on.
How hard it is to drive a bus from point A to B and stock it full of water and food?

Interesting also to see that most tourists staying in hotels were spirited away to safety rather quickly, whilst the locals were left to fend for themselves and desiccate in the hot sun. La plus ca change, la plus c’est la me’me chose.

They certainly shouldn’t rebuild that city - much as I always wanted to visit. New Orleans has been dodging the bullet for hundreds of Years.

Let’s take opinions about the handling of the situation to this thread, and try to limit this one to reports, well wishes and that sort of thing. Thanks.

I can’t even imagine how this will turn out in the end for all of these people. We see the images of all the poor, frail, and old who were unable to leave and now have nothing (if they had anything before). There are 4 or 5 times as many people who made it out of town ahead of time that also have nowhere to go. I’m not worried about the wealthy obviously, but the lower-middle and middle class folks who could afford to leave based on having a job now have nowhere to go, no jobs, and 50% have no flood insurance and will have little hope of recovery, no more than the folks who didn’t have anything to start with.

I heard someone say that an event like this is “the great equalizer”.

D*mn hobby, you can really kill a thread.

Running a Massive Co-Front.

Evidently not. :)

Every time I watch the news my heart breaks.

I don’t understand the animals who take advantage of the chaos to rape, intimidate, and hurt people.

I have fantasies about being an armed vigilante, and protecting the weak.

There was a pregnant woman who swam for half an hour, whilst having labour contractions. She reached a bridge, and gave birth. Her and her baby are now safe, in a hospital in Baton Rouge. She had to leave her five year old son behind in their house. :morose:

Here’s another one…

Justin runs a Yahoo group that some friends of mine belong to. They forwarded this to me. Jackson, Mississippi is 160 miles (257.5 km) due north of New Orleans. There was no flooding, but the hurricane winds were still very powerful.

“Anthony,

After almost a week with no power it finally came back on this morning so I guess life can go on now. I am going to give control of the group to you for awhile until I get everything back in order in my life. During the hurricane which devasted most of my neighborhood something happened that forever will change my life and I am not sure how long it will take me to get back to normal. When the storm finally came ashore and the winds came thru Jackson at over 100 mph it took out power lines, caused me to lose my truck when a tree fell across it but the biggest loss that will forever tear at my heart was the same tree that fell across my truck also crashed into the side of our house killing one of my brothers while he slept. Trevor was one of the twins and they had just turned 16. The tree fell right into the side of his room where his bed was and one of the limbs stuck right thru his chest, he never knew what hit him and never woke up. Thats the way I found him on his bed impaled on a tree branch. Thank everyone for all their thoughts and prayers during the hard time for me and my family it is much appreciated. I love all of you. I will keep in touch but please keep the group going and growing. I am adjusting the settings so you can also approve new members until I am mentally able to rejoin life. Thanks always and love you.

Justin”

West, what a touching and horrific story. This hurricane effected so many more people than just New Orleans. When Jackson MS was hit, it was still packing a punch. I have friends in Hattiesburg MS, where the eye went over, and had sustained winds of over 100 mph. I’ve heard from one, but not the other.

The beautiful Gulf Coast of MS has been all but obliterated. It sickens me to see the pictures, and yet its New Orleans that gets all of the attention.

sunny A day without sunshine is like a day without laughter :sun:

I think the bigger story hasn’t been told yet. With all of the attention focused on NO everyone else has been ignored. The damage and devastation to those other areas will make NO seem more like a non issue by the time it’s over.

Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock. Will Rogers stats- Started PE around 10 yrs ago at 6.25" el and 4.5" eg as of 8/1/2005 6 7/8" el and 5"eg PE does work. If I had been dedicated all along I would probably be 9x7. I never have been consistent with my PE but have gained anyway. Goals are 8x6 by 8/1/2006

I can’t think of very much that could happen to make NO seem like a non-issue.

I agree that Mississippi has also been very hard hit. The pictures from there are awful. I have heard that some towns on the coast just are not there anymore.
