I’m back. In reference to my earlier post way back. I had this all typed up and couldn’t maintain my uplink to post.

Shouldn’t we have had a Carrier Group ready to move in off shore and be a floating city for evac staging and medical triage? Fema and the feds have had War-college/game-theory studies on hand for years that show exactly what a FUBAR New Orleans getting hit would be.

OK, this thread got out of hand while I was gone so I will comment cautiously. I have been involved in a few mobilizations as well as a few bugg-outs over the years. In my opinion the “it takes time” crap being spouted by the government talking heads on TV is pure BS. The “it takes time” to mobilize forces and re-route personal and supplies only washes if you have no advanced notice. We knew days in advance that the gulf coast and N.O. specifically were going to get hit harder than they have ever been. Yes it does take days for everything to flow down the pipe, but we had days before Katrina hit to start sending things down the pipe.

I have a bunch of nurse friends that want to go help and have me along as security, will update you on that but I am leaning against it. We are setting up a safe house and should be able to take in some people in a week or two.

Running a Massive Co-Front.

Its not just New Orleans though, I know a woman who comes into work and we talked before the storm and about what would happen. She went to college in N.O. and said that south of N.O. is mostly poor and the homes are not very stable. This means that they probably got destroyed. So when people just talk about New Orleans, I don’t believe it does justice, because its not just that one city, its alot of surrounding area that was hit. The entire evacuation situation, in my opinion, SHOULD have been handled better with public transportation, etc.

I guess hindsight is 20-20.

The Real News

The following is the result of an interview I just conducted via cell phone with a New Orleans citizen stranded at the Convention Center. I don’t know what you’re hearing in the mainstream media or in the press conferences from the city and state officials, but here is the truth:

“Bigfoot” is a bar manager and DJ on Bourbon Street, and is a local personality and icon in the city. He is a lifelong resident of the city, born and raised. He rode out the storm itself in the Iberville Projects because he knew he would be above any flood waters. Here is his story as told to me moments ago. I took notes while he talked and then I asked some questions:

Three days ago, police and national guard troops told citizens to head toward the Crescent City Connection Bridge to await transportation out of the area. The citizens trekked over to the Convention Center and waited for the buses which they were told would take them to Houston or Alabama or somewhere else, out of this area.

It’s been 3 days, and the buses have yet to appear.

Although obviously he has no exact count, he estimates more than 10,000 people are packed into and around and outside the convention center still waiting for the buses. They had no food, no water, and no medicine for the last three days, until today, when the National Guard drove over the bridge above them, and tossed out supplies over the side crashing down to the ground below. Much of the supplies were destroyed from the drop. Many people tried to catch the supplies to protect them before they hit the ground. Some offered to walk all the way around up the bridge and bring the supplies down, but any attempt to approach the police or national guard resulted in weapons being aimed at them.

There are many infants and elderly people among them, as well as many people who were injured jumping out of windows to escape flood water and the like — all of them in dire straights.

Any attempt to flag down police results in being told to get away at gunpoint. Hour after hour they watch buses pass by filled with people from other areas. Tensions are very high, and there has been at least one murder and several fights. 8 or 9 dead people have been stored in a freezer in the area, and 2 of these dead people are kids.

The people are so desperate that they’re doing anything they can think of to impress the authorities enough to bring some buses. These things include standing in single file lines with the eldery in front, women and children next; sweeping up the area and cleaning the windows and anything else that would show the people are not barbarians.

The buses never stop.

Before the supplies were pitched off the bridge today, people had to break into buildings in the area to try to find food and water for their families. There was not enough. This spurred many families to break into cars to try to escape the city. There was no police response to the auto thefts until the mob reached the rich area — Saulet Condos — once they tried to get cars from there… well then the whole swat teams began showing up with rifles pointed. Snipers got on the roof and told people to get back.

He reports that the conditions are horrendous. Heat, mosquitoes and utter misery. The smell, he says, is “horrific.”

He says it’s the slowest mandatory evacuation ever, and he wants to know why they were told to go to the Convention Center area in the first place; furthermore, he reports that many of them with cell phones have contacts willing to come rescue them, but people are not being allowed through to pick them up.

I have “Bigfoot“‘s phone number and will gladly give it to any city or state official who would like to tell him how everything is under control.

Addendum: Bigfoot just called to report that “they” (the authorities) are cleaning up the dead bodies at the Convention Center right now.

Just off the wire:

“They have M-16s and they’re locked and loaded,” Gov. Kathleen Blanco said of 300 National Guard troops who landed in New Orleans fresh from duty in Iraq. “These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will.”

I’ve been getting so angry watching my tv set, seeing these people so vulnerable and afraid.

My heart truly goes out to everyone suffering out there.

I’m not going to say what I’d like to do to the people preying on the weak ones.

Cheers,

Zig

Civilization is a fragile thing.

I got a big dose of reality on that here in Russia. It is a much more predatory place that the USA. A loss of stability in society will do that I guess.

HalfRusski,

Have you heard from your wife and children? I remember a much earlier (Pre-Katrina) post that they were evacuating. I hope and pray they are safe.

"Nietzsche is dead"-God

I have a sister who’s running a 150 phone hotline staffed by LSU students. She says LSU has been turned into a MASH unit. Conditions are horrible. The poor and the elderly are the ones suffering the most. Total fucking chaos…

I was in Baton Rouge a few years ago during the summer heat and had to stay in my air-conditioned hotel room for most of daylight because it was so hot. I can only imagine being outside all day for days at a time with no clean water and dead bodies baking in the swamp humidity. There is an area in Mississippi were the population of an entire neighborhood (up to 5,000 people) are thought to be dead because they were poor and had no means of transportation. You hear about the shady politicians in the South, how elections are won based on who has the bigger slime campaign to baby-kissing ratio; both of these situations could have been lessened with assertive leadership. Nobody got fired for 9/11; heads had better roll for this tragedy of errors.

My sister says that FEMA and Homeland Sercurity are calling her for information! She says these “trained professionals” are total fuck-ups… Luckily, water and MRE’s are becoming available. Housing the help coming in is a real problem now. She’s trying to find housing for FBI agents coming in.
