Tom Hubbard requests feedback for site overhaul

Over the years I’ve removed info from my site that I deem distracting or repetitive (given the huge amount of info now available elsewhere - meaning here - thank you Thunder ;-).

I’m redesigning it (first time in three years?) and would like some help.

What would make it more useful to you? (Or *would have* made it more useful?)

Have you made and used:

- AFB?
- Ball Zinger (or similar, regards whether or not the principal has effect)?
- drum sticks?
- just using your hands (see the quote about boys pulling their penises)?
- anything else mentioned, on this or previous sites?

If so, could you tell me a little about your experience and recommendation, that I might include, like Amazon or Epinion reviews? I’m not looking for glowing testimonials; I know not every idea works for everyone. I feel, however, that it might help someone finding my site to make decisions about how to proceed. In other words, don’t write it for me; write it for a newbie. Short and sweet, please.

What I like about your site now is it’s less related to what you can buy in a store in the US than many other resources. Considering maybe only 50% of the viewing is from the US, that’s pretty useful. Also the instructions (especially for the AFB) lend themselves to easy modification.

That said, we seem to have a bunch of people here who’ve never picked up a hacksaw and might cut their hand off if they did. For these kinds of people drilling down into (even) the technique of using tools or maybe modification of design to avoid tool usage as much as possible might be useful. Here I’m thinking of the Wench which needs only a pair of scissors to construct on the upside, though on the downside the parts are very US oriented.

I’ve constructed a modified AFB and simplified (no drilling, no rolling parts) drumsticks (from drumsticks :) ). The designs are simple and the instructions I found straightforward.

In terms of the manual technique stuff, I’m sorry to say that I think there are better instructions out there than have existed on your site in the past. Sometimes you have such a gloriously simple approach that it avoids the difficult questions those new to PE have.

I miss your measuring section in your current site. I also miss the ideas you dropped like the pump and the seat hanger concept. You’ve always been hot on ideas and I think it does people good to read and consider them, irrespective of whether they finally build them or not.

I want to second the comments made by memento. Especially the part about your creativity when it comes to the conception of new devices and cheap was to build commercial products. Yours is a rare gift and I miss reading about your new ideas.

Instead of an overhaul, how about a complete new site and we archive the current site?

I like the site the way it is I would just like to see you active again making new PE gadgets cheaply. I think the site is super friendly and easy to use.

I’m definitely hoping you’ll see no need to archive the current site (at least publicly) when you see the new one, and hopefully some of the clutter of past archives can be eliminated as well. I’m pulling info from them for the new site.

My outline thus far looks like this:

Mem suggested I use templates so I can update the site, but I prefer not to have that option, so I’m not tempted to spontaneously ‘improve’ something I’ve worked on for hours.

Every time I look at your site I think it looks like something from out of the 60ies so I get a bit turned off because it has an out dated look.

Just to make it look fresher I would modernize the look and fonts.

Ball zingers don’t work. As long as you add that “in hobby’s opinion” disclaimer, feel free to incorporate my penny zinger design. I’d rather a guy only waste 2 cents if he wants to try one.

If not for Tom’s old site I probably wouldn’t have found PE Forums and then from there Thunder’s Place.

Old style is fine by me. It reminds me that the basics have been around for a long time and are the meat and potatoes of PE. We don’t need expensive gadgets. We don’t need to pay any self-appointed PE guru to view instructions or videos that are merely a revamp of old exercises. PE isn’t expensive or exclusive.

My first thought was, I’ll bet the kid writing this wasn’t even alive in the sixties…chuckle after visiting your profile =P

I agree to an extent - obviously I feel things need changing. I’d like to keep the information as organized and cleanly presented as possible - which, admittedly, is a rather old-fashioned idea. Trendy design has a way of becoming moldy, but I will see if I can spice it up a bit, shy of Flash annies and video (if I ever do get around to learning Flash, you can bet I’ll be back with a vengeance;-).

I like the old design. Tom, your site was the first site I saw that made me believe PE was possible. (November 2003) After that I found Thunder’s. I remember the first time I read your site I was thinking, “Man, this guy is crazy”. Then of course, I went back, made some jelq sticks and started my journey that currently has me squeezing a clamp on my penis and hanging weights on it like a medieval torture contraption. Thanks!
