Coupling problems, losing air when I pump, the cylinder is fine

Coupling problems, losing air when I pump, the cylinder is fine

The title pretty much says it all, my question is how do I replace it ? Where do I buy one without paying a large amount of money for a new pump from a PE site that sells pumps ?

The coupler from the leluv pump was never the best, the o ring on it never allowed for a proper sealment and I’ve always been pumping only fitting the coupler halfway and I was only using the cylinder to keep the pressure, wich works great but now I have this new problem. Everytime I want to go over 4-5hg, I loose pressure, if I even try to seal the coupler to the end, I completely loose air out of the tube as if the pump wasn’t even connected. If I hold it halfway I can pump to maybe 6hg with a lot of effort, but I eventually loose all the air if I don’t disconnect it, so I’m stuck at pumping at lower than 5hg all the time for now.

I bought a new pump with a new connector but this one lost it’s o ring eventually and it also makes all the air disappear as soon as I connect it to the cylinder.

Can anybody help, please ?

I dont understand your explanation. Try posting a picture of the setup and show where you think the problem(s) is/are.

Initial: 7” BPEL; 6” NBPEL; 5.25” - 5.5” MEG

Current: 7-7/8” BPEL; 7-3/8” NBPEL; 8.5” BPFSL; 6.5” MEG; 6”x5” Flaccid.

I don’t have a camera phone right now, can’t take a picture.

So the pump has 4 components: the cylinder, the pump, the tube and the connector (coupler).

Every time I connect the coupler to the tube as any pumper does in order to pump more air in their tube, I loose air immediately.

I found the couplers to be a hassle. Go to the auto parts or hardware store and pick up a fitting that’s 1/8 NPT on one end and 1/4” barb on the other, unscrew the fancy coupler, and put the barb fitting in. Use a rag and your hand to screw it in as tight as you can. Don’t use a wrench unless you have to; the fitting is tapered to self-seal, and it can wedge a crack in the plastic if you tighten it too much.

I found the theoretical convenience of being able to disconnect without losing vacuum was of little value considering pump times are relatively short, and swapping to a barb got rid of the leaks and occasional not-quite-disconnects.

Just push the hose on enough to get a seal, and you can get it off without too much trouble in order to swap tubes or wash the tube.

A quick connect/disconnect coupler is comprised of two parts: the female coupler which is screwed into the cylinder and has an o-ring to seal the connection, and a male quick disconnect coupler which has a barb fitting on one aide for the hose to slide over and the male end which clicks into the female fitting. Some male connectors have an o-ring.

Which o ring are you having a problem with? Take the o ring to your local hardware store and get a replacement.

You can have a leak at any of the 3 connection points.

The leaks can be caused by:
- a damaged o ring,
- the female coupler not being screwed into the cylinder sufficiently (hand tight then slightly more)
- the connection of the male quick coupler not clicking (sealing) into the female coupler sufficiently. Hold it in tight helps here.
- the hose is loose or has split over the barb fitting

Quick connect couplers cost around $10 each and can be found many places online (amazon) or at a sufficiently stocked hardware store (typically not HomeDepot or Lowes).

Or as Andy suggested just replace them with a $5 barbed fitting (barbed x threaded). You have the choice of brass or plastic.

It was the o ring.

Thanks guys, problem solved.

The o ring wasn’t fitting well on the leluv hose/pump so I removed it and placed it on the other pump wich lost it’s o ring recently. It works better with the new pump, way better actually, I can finally fit the thickwall cylinder without losing connection if I wasn’t holding it with my hand as well, that means it is very comfortable to pump now, finally..

The o ring looks a liitle damaged, I’ll have to buy more of these small o rings.

Glad you got it solved.

For others or future reference, the couplers are sold by McMaster-Carr and are pretty inexpensive. There are several sizes and connection types.
