Pumping

I’m new to the whole P.E. Thing. I have about 5 or 6 months under my belt now. And I’ve been considering adding pumping to my routine. I read a thread where one could purchase the gauge from Harbor Frieght and the cylinder from a pet store. My question to ya’ll is where would you get that thin clear tube that goes from the gauge to the cylinder? And what about the two couplings? I looks like you need at least two, right?

I’m trying to find this stuff without having to order it online and have it delivered and possibly intercepted by the old lady!

Thank you very much!

You could probabaly get the plastic flexible tube from Walmart. And you should be able to get the couplings from Harbour Freight - I would guess.

Psst! The link is at the bottom of the page :bigwink:

Try a hardware store, Sears, a tool store or an automotive parts store.

Pititfaun,

As you suggested I will try Walmart this weekend.

Thank you very much!

Grx,

I’m writing down all these great ideas now.

Thanks bro!

You can buy a Mityvac with gage @ Sears. It is usually cheapest there & Sears send out coupons pretty regularly! You might be able to get a coupon from their website for tools. They also have various hose kits there & gages. This will fit to PE cylinders very well.

If you just want a “gravel tube” for a pump, Walmart has a set that’s pretty good. However, the suction tube is larger diameter. You will need to be able to reduce the size of the tube to hook to a hand pump.

Grx,

Thank you, your last post was very informative! I’m gonna try and get that Mityvac you speak of. Is the hand pump connected to the gauge?

Sparkyx,

What is this plasti-dip and where do you find it. And how is it applied? Do you have to melt it?

It’s at hardware stores. It’s the consistency of thick paint but it’s rubber. It’s main use is to dip tool handles to make them slip-resistant & more shock-absorbing. You do not have to melt it. Just dip and let it dry. Then dip again & let dry. It’s great for tools too!

Thats AWESOME!! And great to know! I have a few tools I could use this stuff for, as well as the other thing. :-)

Thanks Grx!

Just dip it, and hang it suspended or upside down until dry. Repeat if desired.

I buy it here in CA in Home Depot, Harbor Freight and Lowes

Thankx Sparkyx.

It says to mix it with thinner. Is this what you did?

No, its fine as is…just thick. You only need a bit to get the job done, and the lid that comes with it is inadequate to seal it and it starts to dry out. I did use thinner to revive a batch that I had sitting, it works well. If you wish to store the remainder, get a screw on type jar like an old pickle container.

I prefer to get a wide mouth container, that way I can just dip the cylinder straight into the jar. Then when I am done you just screw on the lid and keep it until the next time you need it.

The different colors have different characteristics. The black is the softest, and sticks to the skin the best, and I believe this is what Monty uses on his PE wts. The next softest is the white, but a bit tougher than the black. The red is the hardest and I only needed to apply it once on my gravel cylinder and it has never come off yet. The other colors only last a while before they either get damaged or come off.

Make sure the cylinder is completely clean and dry before you apply it. I like to use alcohol to clean the surface completely. If you wish to do multi-layers, and you probably WILL need to, you only need to let it dry about 10 minutes (depending on temp and humidity) and you can add the next layer.

Sparkyx,

Sounds like a simple enough process.

What I’m confused about is how does the tube connect to the gravel cylinder and the gauge?

And is there a hand pump connected to the gauge?
