I think I’ve finally figured out what is causing me this problem, not that it actually seems to matter as nobody in the medical field seems willing to see me anymore. I believe I have a varicose vein which is causing the atrophy along with the other symptoms I’m suffering from. When the problem first started occurring I became aware of an enlarged vein on the left side of my penis which wasn’t previously noticable. I didn’t really think anything of it as the sight of veins on my penis doesn’t really bother me. It has now become apparent that it is at the site around the vein which is becoming atrophic. This area also aches, burns and itches, and the fact that the tissue from this area is disappearing is causing my penis to constantly pull and bend to this side, which now seems permanent and worsens by the day.
I have looked into varicose veins and found that not only can varicose veins be regularly found in the penis and testes, but some of the problems relating to varicose veins include - pain, such as aching, heavy feeling, burning sensation, itching, change in skin colour/appearance, and lipodermatosclerosis - ATROPHY of the fatty tissue of the skin.
Basically varicose veins are regular veins in which their one way valves have become faulty, causing blood to leak back into the veins, instead of continuing to flow away from the area. The blood collects in these veins and causes these problems. These problems are normally associated with varicose veins in the legs, but if we know varicose veins occur in the penis, then why can’t they cause similar problems in this area?
I became quite optimistic about the idea that I had found why these problems are happening, and I made an appointment with my GP, who surprisingly agreed with me that it could actually be a varicose vein at the heart of the problem. My GP took another look at my penis and agreed to write to the Urologist again to suggest making another appointment with him to discuss the matter further. About three weeks later I received a letter asking me to see my GP to discuss the response from the Urologist. My GP read me the letter which stated the urologist would “loathe” to see me again, and that I needed “psychiatric help”. He was also good enough to supply a name of a Psychiatrist for me to see. I laughed at the time, possibly through disbelief at what I was hearing, but now the thought of how someone can be so heartless and flippant about something that causes me so must strain infuriates me.
On top of this, my GP is now suggesting I see a psychiatrist and refuses to refer me to a different Urologist! (Something he actually said he would do if the first Urologist refused to see me again). So I’m left at square one, yet again, and the only option now seemingly available is to pay to privately see a different Urologist, something which I’m sure I can’t afford if I had to pay for anything more than a consultation, and who’s to say another Urologist is going to take on board my suggestion? Nobody else has listened to me so far, so why would they?
The only other thing I thought about looking into was enquiring whether a cosmetic surgeon would remove the vein which is seemingly causing the problems. The sight of the vein doesn’t bother me one bit, but if this is the route I’d have to go to to alleviate the constant discomfort and atrophy to the left side, then I’m prepared to do this.
So that is where I am at now. I’m hoping to find some other sites and blogs where I can post these theories so others can look into this also, and hopefully tell me if this seems like what they are suffering from. If anyone wants to discuss anything relating to this please don’t hesitate to PM me. Cheers.
