Benefits of Fish Oil

From Hobby’s Link:

“The typical fish oil capsule you’ll encounter is 1000 mg fish oil; we, however, are more concerned with the EPA and DHA content of that 1000 mg. In most cases, you’ll find 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA per capsule. A good rule of thumb (especially based on the results of the clinical trials) is to consume 3-6 g combined EPA and DHA per day; at this capsule size, you’d need 10-20 capsules per day. For this reason, liquid fish oil is a great alternative. “

Obviously that is a lot of capsules, and the idea of consuming fish oil in liquid form doesn’t appeal to me.

Those who supplement with fish oil, how many capsules to you take per day?

I used to take 6 tablets in the 1,000 mg a day type. It helped within 3 weeks for my ulcerative colitis. It became very manageable. My Osteopathic Doctor said give them a try back in 2000.

“You see, I don’t want to do good things, I want to do great things.” ~Alexander Joseph Luthor

I know Lewd Ferrigno personally.

Same as Twat, I usually take 6 of the cheapies per day. I went through a bottle of some double strength enteric coated pills, which didn’t do much to curb occasional fish burps. I took 4-6 of those daily. I don’t see any need for high doses unless you’re trying to treat something that requires more.

Has anyone tried liquid fish oil? Which brand? Was it any good?

I’ve been trying to get my mother to take fish oil, but she is afraid of swallowing big pills. If I can find some bottled stuff that is palatable maybe she’ll start using it.

I am very interested in your experience in using fish oil with ulcerative colitis……. Which kind of fish oil did you take (salmon….)?

Hobby,

I’ve been taking Friggs (Swedish health food brand) liquid fish oil in varying dosages (consistency not being one of my main personality traits). During december I downed nearly 2 bottles of 150 mg each, which translates to roughly 10 grams of oil daily, or ~3 grams Omega3 daily. I took it as one table spoon morning/evening and some days just a swig out of the bottle. They’ve added Vitamin E and lemon oil for taste. It goes down with a shudder, trick is to stick the spoon deep in your mouth and pour it into your throat, not wash the stuff around with your tongue. The only reason I’ve bought it is because it comes at a third of the price compared to capsules (even Friggs own capsules).

I can’t say I notice any difference since I started taking fish oil at all, except for not having stomach problems from eating anti-inflammatory medicine (herniated disc) - I’d reflected on my lack of problems and then read that Omega 3 had that effect - and a real bad nasal congestion in one nostril that involved snotting brown mucus (soft tissues extra prone to bleeding, maybe?). Maybe my lack of being bothered by arthritic symptoms from my bum hip is a result of Omega3 intake. Other than that no identifiable differences I can think of. My main purpose in taking it is for keeping depression away, as a preventive measure. I’ve just upped the dosage to ~3 grams Omega3 since December to see if I can duplicate Mr. Happy’s results in feeling happier, but to no avail sofar. But then again, I think those things are difficult to gauge on your own.

Thanks, mgus. Interesting info. My mom would need something that is at least neutral tasting, and preferably pleasant. None of this gag and chug it business.

I’ve never noticed any subjective difference in any parameters when taking fish oil, but I’ve never used it to help any particular condition.

I’m not sure you can find anything that is neutral, that kind of goes against the whole fish idea. On the other hand, I think some people might just accept or even like the taste. At first I thought it was awful, now I just don’t like it.

If you need reminder of what is truly nasty, try some L-Arginine powder.

Since you are my property, the contents of your mind are also my property, and you will give them to me when I ask.

Hmpth. Mgus and Mr. Happy, neither reporting increased libido taking lots of fish oil. I want to know why. I know it’s not just the placebo effect; why do increased dopamine and improved circulation not have a sexual effect on some people? Why? Maybe the dopamine effect from fish oil isn’t triggered in some people.

As for palatable non-capsule fish oil, there are two but they are both expensive. Coromega is probably the best-tasting fish oil out there, suitable for children. And also the liquid OmegaRx fish oil from Zone Labs isn’t bad at all. I can talk about that brand now that I’ve lost my funding from them (they didn’t like the magazine article, dadblangit).

Just to add my couple cents: me and the girl have been taking fish oil caps for a few weeks now.

She told me the other day that she’s had much less in the way of gut problems (she has problems with her stomach, digestion. I forget the name(s) of the condition(s) at the moment but basically it causes her indigestion, reflux, painful crapping, etc) since taking the oil caps. She also says she thinks she’s noticed a very slight increase in her enjoyment of sex (ease/intensity of orgasm I guess, I didn’t query very far) She’s only been taking 1 or 2 a day, far less than many people recommend. I’ve been trying to get her to take at least a few more per day.

Myself, I’ve been taking 4 a day, deciding to start on low doses. Well, I’ve had far less problems with my joints (which are usually strained and painful and crack alot). My larger joints such as hip joints pop a hell of a lot more, recently, for some reason. But it’s a less painful pop. It is possible my joints are more “well lubricated”?

I have also just noticed a reduced sensitivity to chilli. From eating mega hot curries etc over the past several years, I burned holes in my belly and shat fire the day after if I dared eat anything spicy. Recently, I can actually handle the stuff again without experiencing immobilising agony which seems like too much of a coincidence…

I did like the interview! However, I did not like the author’s utter laziness about putting just a little effort into improving her sex life. Obviously, she really wasn’t interested in improving her situation.

After reading the recommendations of several here at thunders — especially Zaneblue’s — I bought a couple of bottles of fish oil capsules. I took 2 to 3 grams per day for a few weeks and them BAM! I would get wood with just the right thoughts. I now get uncontrollable hard-ons whenever I touch my wife, even casually in public. And, sex has definitely improved with my now ultra-rigid erections.

This is great stuff and definitely worth the occasional fish burp.

Thanks for the feedback! That’s the thing I am fascinated with—how come some people it’s so amazing and works so obviously, and I know it’s not the placebo effect with them, and others—nothing. I suspect it has to do with serotonin levels, but I’m not sure.

Zane,

Well, both Mr Happy and I have complained about having a dispostion towards the blues, so I guess our serotonin levels are all fucked up to start with. If it makes you happier, I can report getting real hard erections from touching my wife as well, in the most unsexual ways. So I guess my libido - or preparedness level - has increased.

Do you have any pointers in the direction of depression versus dopamine and Omega3 versus serotonin levels? Does Omega3 affect serotonin or the HPA axis in any way? Any idea of how/if it affects neurogenes (I think that is the word for neuron rebuilding), especially in the Hippocampus area?

Seqjay,

As I mentioned above, apparently Omega3 protects the stomach lining from the harshness of anti-inflammatory medicines (maybe the mentioned NSAID as well) - I take Naproxen. No problems with the gut. Possibly the same mechanism affects the chillis as well?
