Benefits of Fish Oil

Maybe the dopamine effect from fish oil isn’t triggered in some people.

As for palatable non-capsule fish oil, there are two but they are both expensive. Coromega is probably the best-tasting fish oil out there, suitable for children. And also the liquid OmegaRx fish oil from Zone Labs isn’t bad at all. I can talk about that brand now that I’ve lost my funding from them (they didn’t like the magazine article, dadblangit).

Say, ZB, (If I can call you that) is there any reason why a person could not take Flaxseed oil in lieu of Fish Oil. Do they not contain similar amounts of the exact same compounds?

I take the fish oil, but my wife says she doesn’t like it. I picked up some Flaxseed oil and the label reads almost identically to the otra stuff. Any hints?

I’ve been trying to get my mother to take fish oil, but she is afraid of swallowing big pills. If I can find some bottled stuff that is palatable maybe she’ll start using it.

Does Cod Liver Oil count?

-My dear boy, do you ask a fish how it swims? (No.) Or a bird how it flies? (No.) Of course not. They do it because they were born to do it...

mgus, your post did make me happy. If I’m going to work like gangbusters getting grant money, I want to make damn sure fish oil does what I think it does, and the more people I hear with positive feedback the more confident I feel.

Actually depressed people seem to improve the most sexually from fish oil, because of the low serotonin. Fish oil does raise serotonin but it raises dopamine more. Acts similar to Wellbutrin. In fact, I strongly suspect most modern general depression is partly generated by omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, like scurvy. Some depressed people do instinctively self-medicate with nicotine and caffeine and other stimulants; if you have high spiked serotonin levels from that sort of thing the fish oil probably won’t work as well, sexually speaking.

Don’t know about neurogenes or the HPA axis. If you want to get some more detail on how fish oil works on the brain, here’s some light reading:

Flaxseed oil does not contain EPA or DHA, it contains ALA which is a precursor. Some studies indicate the conversion ratio is something like 30 to 1, so unless you are drinking a gallon of flax oil a day, it probably won’t work the same as my diet. If you get the ultra-refined fish oil in capsules it won’t taste like anything and you won’t get fishy burps, or at least not as much. Check the fish oil label for EPA and DHA amounts; I recommend EPA+DHA>500 mg per one one-gram capsule.

Cod liver oil certainly has a reputation for tasting vile. If you know a good-tasting brand, kudos to you. I should also mention for people on my diet that it is unsafe to take huge amounts of cod liver oil because it also contains Vitamin A and you may go over the safe limit for Vitamin A.

I’ve got my son taking this stuff:

It’s still pretty fishy to me, but I give it to him in between spoon fulls of Cinnamon Life and he hasn’t puked yet.

I’ve also tried Coromega . It’s more palatable, but the DHA and EPA content per packet isn’t as high as the Nordic Naturals.

Fish oil can increase dopamine?

But only if you ingest it and don’t ralph it back out….

You have to spell everything out for the consumer and their lawyers (vile creatures).

I know Lewd Ferrigno personally.

zaneblue: Sorry that my question may seem to repetitive. Could you tell me what kind of fish oil is it? I mean, what kind of label should I find on the bottle?

The key ingredients are EPA and DHA. I recommend ultra-refined fish oil over regular drugstore fish oil, however this opinion got me embroiled in a huge fight in another thread. I’m not recommending a specific brand, mind you, just that in my experience helping people with libido problems, the ultra-refined works better. Ultra-refined would be EPA+DHA>500 mg for one one-gram capsule. I recommend for a person <150 lbs to take approximately 1700 mg of EPA and 1300 mg of DHA. For a person >200 lbs approximately 3400 mg of EPA and 2600 mg of DHA. Those are rough, adjust dosage as necessary. A person should also take a multivitamin when taking fish oil.

Don’t take fish oil like this if you are on a blood-thinning medication like Coumadin or aspirin therapy, take lots of over-the-counter pain relievers, are scheduled for surgery, are allergic to seafood or have a defibrillator. It would be a good idea to check with your doctor if you have any medical conditions before doing this. Start slowly, one pill a day, adding one pill per week. Take with food.

If I get the drift of what serotonin does, I guess that I don’t fit that model. I would characterize myself as an optimist and generally upbeat person. I am known at work for being intolerant of whiners and pessimists and for finding ways out of ugly problems. My home life is also good. Another datum that might be related is that, for many years, I haven’t needed much sleep. Typically, I wake after 6 hours a night; hence my early, west coast postings.

The ease and strength of my new erections caught me by surprise. Over the last 8 months since I started PE, I have covered quite a range in erectile function. I had gone from a mild ED (partial softening during intercourse) before starting PE, to more-than-satisfactory performance early in my PE career, to a disappointing period when overtraining and excessive porn led to very short-lived erections. A break and moderation helped me ease back into satisfactory performance. That was all before the fish oil.

The boner fairy began visiting me in about the third week. I was not anticipating the effect. I was taking the capsules with almost every meal on autopilot and forgetting about the fish oil otherwise.

One other thing did change shortly before my surplus of wood showed up. I had gone into a training taper just before my first marathon, and that’s also when I started taking the capsules. After my event in early December, I completely stopped my 3x per week running. I am now just starting up again and I’ll see if that has any effect.

Three weeks. Now that is interesting. For men I usually just recommend a week for results and a month for women, to rule out monthly hormonal fluctuation. I’m going to start recommending a month for men too.

Thanks zaneblue. I will give it a try!

Zane,

I read elsewhere about the SSRIs and the 2-4 week delay before any mood improvement is had, and the author noted that when SSRIs are given to PMS-related depression, they act in about 24 hrs. Obviously, something is different there, and his line of thought was that with PMS-depression, the SSRI hit serotonin immediately, and since that was the cause it was fixed. For regular depressions the effect takes longer - and his take was that this probably had to do with the HPA axis and how the allostas (level adjustment system) was affected - the serotonin may be the problem but the levels of serotonin need to be changed for a longer time to allow the other hormones etc to catch up and reach a new (more correct) level (allostas).

Bearing that in mind, it might be prudent to recommed a month for men as well, to allow the other hormonal systems time to catch up and readjust for the new levels changed by Omega3.

I really do appreciate the info, mgus. I am trying very hard, or at least I will be in 24 hours, to get going on funding to study it (dratted holiday season—bah humbug!)
