Supplements for Eyes

Supplements for Eyes

Will greatly appreciate recommendation of food or supplements that have helped you in improving the overall state of health of your eyes - so that your eyes don’t get easily strained and fatigued. Thanks.

Phosphorus and anything that contains it, for example fish.

Stats (bp) 2004/08/19 8.0 X 5.5" 2005/08/29 8.2 X 5.8" Goal - I am good for now

Vitamin A, C, and E (you can get A and C from fruits and vegetables and E from carrots).

Zinc too.

In what situations do your eyes get strained and fatigued? In front of a computer? Get a TCO-rated screen. During the pollen season? Consider buying an air purifier for your bedroom. In general at home? Get a ostrich feather duster, and clean your apartment. When driving in the dark? Get prescription glasses. Are they dry in general? Do what the optician told me - practice blinking 20 times in succession often, it will make you blink more frequently overall.

If I remember my biology classes correctly, betakaroten (in carrots) is transformed to vitamin A and then to retinal in the eyes, which is used in the retina to transform light to electrical impulse. Lack of betakaroten or vitamin A would therefore not be good.

Had severe uveitis 3 years ago - was hospitalized twice. Now fully recovered. But things are not the same anymore - while in the past I could read for many hours without rest, now my eyes get fatigued even after a short while of reading.

Ophthalmologist said any supplement that claims to help the eyes are so far not proven in Western medicine. But still hoping that my eyes will return to its old state with the aid of supplements and food. But unwilling to spend time and money on anything that are just scams and out to make money.

I suppose the opthalmologist has ruled out reading glasses? I’ve heard of someone reading through a blue pane of glass to aid contrast or whatever the reason was. Might want to experiment with a few filters or stuff.

I presume you are familiar with the support organizations listed at the bottom of this page? I would imagine they would have more to offer than us. http://en.wikip … rg/wiki/Uveitis

Most supplements I guess you can get by simply targetting the vitamins etc suggested abouve by vitamin pills and diet rather than superduper supplements. (I was about to joke about fish oil, but found that there is some research on macular degeneratoin and Omega3: http://www.oilo fpisces.com/fis … anddisease.html , but that does not seem linked to uveitis)

PE is rejected by mainstream medicine. Likewise, many health supplements purported to help certain medical conditions are not advocated by Western medicine, purely on the lack of concrete evidence. But this does not mean they don’t work.

I was on high dose steroid to prevent inflammation and this caused many side effects - liver inflammation, bloating of face, increase in weight, low testosterone level, etc. Fortunately, I am now off all medications.

I am keen to try any food or health supplements that may improve the condition of my eyes. My problem is just easy tiredness; I have no problem seeing, contrasting, whatever. By the way, I have severe myopia.

Myself I was a skeptic to acupuncture until I had a locked neck/shoulder - and had it unlocked by the twist of a needle. I don’t claim that unless it’s accepted in western medicine it won’t work - on the contrary, there are many functional diseases (or at least symptoms or sideeffects) that can be taken care of by using acupuncture. I am more sceptical to supplements, except for fish oil of course.

The case of the guy that used a blue glass pane in order to read, I remember now it was someone who suffered from dyslexia (one symptom, a myriad of causes) and for him the change of contrast between black/blue made it possible to keep the letters from changing places all the time. Just a thought that maybe something like that would make it easier on your eyes, not saying that the contrast or whatever is failing but maybe it takes a greater toll on you these days. I guess you can experiment with different lighting - old lightbulb, fullcolor spectrum light tube etc.

Lutein, bilberry, and zeaxanthin. Lots of studies on these — check out Life Extension Foundation http://search.l ef.org/search/d … ?s=1&QUERY=eyes

Check out Bausch & Lomb under "Eye Vitamins" selection.

Haven’t used any of these yet, but they have some interesting supplements.

Myself I was a skeptic to acupuncture until I had a locked neck/shoulder - been there heaps of times myself with the same injury. My problem is posture and when I get home from work I like to vege out for 20 mins in front of the TV. If I sit incorrectly I have a locked neck and shoulder. Previously I have been to Physio etc for weeks on end to mend it. Now it is a simple and quick exercise within 2 minutes I have it under control. Alot of our issues are understanding them and finding a remedy or diet to cope with them. What ever you find and you are happy with it, stick to it.
