What to Get Check if You Suspect Low Testosterone Levels?

Zed: I am kinda with The Great Divider it is possible you are starving yourself with your cutting diet. I wonder if you are getting enough protein for the amount of work you are doing at the gym. Are you getting healthy fats? (fats with CLA and OMEGA3)

Several years ago I was caught in this "cutting mentality". Happily a natural body builder at my gym pulled me aside and said "You are starving yourself. You need to eat more to get lean" So I upped my protein, started going heavier.

I saw a HUGE difference in my physique in only a month. (I don’t like to post pix on thunders, but I will PM you my 1 month before and after if you want if you want).

Additionally, I think you should switch your cardio to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) 20 mins three times a week. Great for fat burning as the effects last for several hours afterwards (unlike long duration cardio). Also very muscle sparing (unlike long duration cardio)

HIIT Squad.

That thread references a great article by Shawn Phillips about HIIT I posted here:

sta-kool - How to look good while still having some body fat?!

As to carbs, what works for me when losing fat is getting all my carbs from fruits and vegetables. No starchy carbs (bread, milk, white potatoes, cereal etc).

13 Ways to Naturally Boost Your Testosterone Levels

By Ron Geraci, Men's Health, December 25, 2000

The normal level of testosterone in your bloodstream is between 350 and 1,000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dl). Like combable hair, those quantities silently start to wane around age 40. You lose about 1 percent a year — a harmless decline in the short term, but a cause of obesity, brittle bones, muscle loss and impotence by the time you reach your 60s — if you live that long. Testosterone levels in the low range (a blood serum score below 350 ng/dl) may increase your chances of dying of a heart attack.

It’s not just an old man’s problem, either. Men in their 30s and 40s also fall prey to low testosterone counts. It’s a disorder called hypogonadism, and it can be caused by an undescended testicle, a testicular injury, a pituitary gland disorder or even prescription drugs. It usually goes undiagnosed until a man hits his doctor with a telltale complaint: "I can’t get an erection."

"If you have reduced levels of sexual desire, have your testosterone level checked immediately," says Dr. Allen Seftel, a urologist at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland. You can replenish your testosterone stores with injections, gels, pills or patches, but these medical treatments are no panacea: Side effects include acne, high cholesterol, shrunken testicles and liver damage. Further, don’t take supplements like DHEA or androstenedione to boost testosterone; they might increase your risks of prostate cancer and heart disease.

"For men with borderline testosterone scores, I advise them to try to raise their levels through exercise and weight loss before going on testosterone therapy," says Dr. Goldberg. And it might pay to start young. "Since your testosterone declines at a steady rate, it’s conceivable that raising your hormone levels naturally in your 20s and 30s could help you maintain higher levels later on," he says. Either way, the reward can be a stronger physique and better bedroom sessions than you’d otherwise deserve. Below are 13 tips designed to get your juice up — safely.

Get Rid of the Flopping Belly

Or you’ll grow a pair of fetching breasts to complement it. Carrying excess body fat elevates your estrogen levels, and that may cause your testosterone levels to sink, says Joseph Zmuda, an epidemiologist at the University of Pittsburgh. Louie Anderson is proof enough of this. Two or three extra pounds won’t cause this hormonal shift; it really occurs once you’re 30 percent over your ideal body weight. "Unfortunately, that’s pretty common now," says Dr. Dobs.

But Lose Only One Pound a Week

When you want to trim down quickly, you probably starve yourself while exercising like a madman. One of the many reasons this stops working in your 30s, when your natural testosterone levels start dropping, is pretty simple: Cutting your calorie intake by more than 15 percent makes your brain think you’re starving, so it shuts down testosterone production to wait out the famine. "There’s no need to reproduce if you’re starving," explains Thomas Incledon of Human Performance Specialists in Plantation, Fla. Ironically, this dive in circulating testosterone stops you from burning body fat efficiently, so you’re actually thwarting your hard efforts to melt that tire off your gut.

Skip the Atkins Fad

Research suggests that eating a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet can cramp your testosterone levels. High amounts of dietary protein in your blood can eventually lower the amount of testosterone produced in your testes, says Incledon, who observed this relationship in a Penn State study of 12 healthy, athletic men.

Your protein intake should be about 16 percent of your daily calories, Incledon says. So, if you’re the average 170-pound man who eats 2,900 calories a day, you should eat about 140 grams of protein daily, which is about the amount in two chicken breasts and a 6-ounce can of tuna.

Have Morning Sex

German scientists found that simply having an erection causes your circulating testosterone to rise significantly — and having one in the morning can goose your natural post-dawn testosterone surge. It’s a sure bet you’ll burn a little fat, too.

Stick With Tough Exercises

To beef up your testosterone levels, the bulk of your workout should involve "compound" weight-lifting exercises that train several large muscle groups, and not just one or two smaller muscles. For example, studies have shown that doing squats, bench presses or back rows increases testosterone more than doing biceps curls or triceps pushdowns, even though the effort may seem the same. This is why doing squats could help you build bigger biceps.

Make Nuts Your Midnight Snack

Nuts are good for your nuts. Research has found that men who ate diets rich in monounsaturated fat — the kind found in peanuts — had the highest testosterone levels. "It’s not known why this occurs, but some scientists believe that monounsaturated fats have a direct effect on the testes," says Incledon. Nuts, olive oil, canola oil and peanut butter are good sources of monounsaturated fat.

Squeeze Out Five Repetitions per Set

Throwing around 5-pound dumbbells won’t help you effect a rise in testosterone. Start off by using a heavy weight that you can lift only five times. That weight is about 85 percent of your one-repetition maximum. A Finnish study found that this workload produced the greatest boosts in testosterone.

Do Three Sets of Each Weight-Lifting Movement

Researchers at Penn State determined that this fosters greater increases in testosterone than just one or two sets. Rest a full minute between sets, so you can regain enough strength to continue lifting at least 70 percent of your one-rep maximum during the second and third sets.

Rest Harder Than You Work Out

If you overtrain — meaning you don’t allow your body to recuperate adequately between training sessions — your circulating testosterone levels can plunge by as much as 40 percent, according to a study at the University of North Carolina. The symptoms of overtraining are hard to miss: irritability, insomnia, muscle shrinkage, joining the Reform Party. To avoid overtraining, make sure you sleep a full eight hours at night, and never stress the same muscles with weight-lifting movements two days in a row.

Drive Home Sober

To maintain a healthy testosterone count — and titanium erections — cut yourself off after three drinks. "Binge drinking will kill your testosterone levels," warns Incledon. Alcohol affects the endocrine system, causing your testes to stop producing the male hormone. That’s one reason drinking often causes you to go limp at the moment of truth.

Have a Sandwich at 3 p.m.

As any sensible woman knows, the way to put hair on a man’s chest is to fill his stomach. Your body needs a ready supply of calories to make testosterone, so regularly skipping meals or going for long stretches without eating can cause your levels of the hormone to plummet. Then again, that’s probably the warden’s plan.

Buy the Fried Tortilla Chips

If you want to raise your testosterone score, eat a diet that includes about 30 percent fat, and not much less. Your body needs dietary fat to produce testosterone, so eating like a vegetarian aerobics instructor will cause your testosterone levels to sink drastically. This is bad, unless you actually are a vegetarian aerobics instructor.

Stop Surfing for Porn at 2 a.m.

Sleeping less than seven to eight hours a night can screw up your circadian rhythm. That’s why it’s no wonder your testosterone levels are higher in the morning after a good night’s sleep. So if your work or social schedule keeps you stooped in perpetual jet lag, don’t be surprised if you stop craving sex. At least that’ll make it easier to stay out of bed.

Yes I do get my fats. From olive oil 2-3 tablespoons a day, omega 3’s and occasional peanut butter sandwich on wheat bread.

Ok check your PM’s in a 5 mins or so.

I do want to correct some misinformation about male HRT (hormone replacement therapy) in this thread, so I hope you don’t mind me doing another long post later. This is mostly for future guys who are in need of HRT and are searching the forum and come across your thread.

Loved all the above tips agree 100%

Have Morning Sex
Great time to pe btw but watch out for the fatigue.

Stick With Tough Exercises
Squat, deadlift, bench press, row. military press
Learn em’ love em’!

Rest Harder Than You Work Out
Can’t agree more here. Too many guys wear themselves out at the gym and skip a month due to lack of motivation.
On occasion you can work some of the same muscle in the same week or back to back but be prepared to rest all that much longer.

Drive Home Sober

Why have 3? Just limit yourself to one shot of vadka (one of the lowest in cals) about 5hours after workout and keep the fat burning going. You’re taking in 7g of carbs from per 120-140 calories wich the body has to process first before any food. Keep your PI!

Have a Sandwich at 3 p.m.
Buy the Fried Tortilla Chips

Love the chips, but better yet have some lean cut beef once a day and fit it into your calorie needs. If that’s too much then eat it once a week atleast, or something else like muscles, lamb, lean pork, or beef jerky, and no Mcdonalds is not the best source for this.

Stop Surfing for Porn at 2 a.m.

Supplement with 25mg of zinc once a day on an empty stomach . You’ll lose about 1mg of zinc per ever nut busted and more from sweating and exerting yourself. You can get a fair amount from foods but at times you may need more…. and it’s super cheap!

That’s about it agree with the rest though.

I go with the old school recommendations.
Under 10-12% BF produces more test than est (from bodyfat)….But few fat guys have the balls to get down to that healthier weight without jumping on steroids or some form of quick fix. Let’s face it, if you’re under 35 years old then you should have enough natural Test to get any goal accomplished naturally. Even if you’re older, but you’re going to have to be smart about your diet and training to maximize potential without spending $$$$ on steroid shots or supplements that will eventually wear out your adrenal system and cause you to get depressed, and weak, and worse off then you were in the first place.

And oh yeah, TESTOSTERONE AGES YOU BADLY!

Testosterone: information EVERY guy should know

I was diagnosed with low testosterone (T) about 6 months ago, after suffering various symptoms for at least 5 years. I have learned a lot about low T, I really wish I had learned this much earlier so I am posting this so hopefully I can help out some other guys. I am only 41 years old so what I have gone through is premature for my age, but EVERY guy will go through some of these symptoms if you live long enough so I urge you to educate yourself about it ahead of time. Low T is a bit of a taboo subject and most guys don’t talk about this kind of stuff even with their friends.

First off, I’m not a doctor, although I have a Master’s degree in biology, but what I have discovered is that most doctors don’t know a lot about low T and you have to educate yourself. I have done a lot of reading but by far the best reference I found is a book called “Testosterone for Life” by Dr. Abraham Morgentaler. He is a researcher at the top of his field from Harvard Medical School and he also readily admits that a lot of other physicians don’t know enough about this subject. I actually got the book from my on-line library (Overdrive) but I have noticed you can also get it from Amazon or download it from various free torrents. It’s a quick and easy read and it pretty much answers all the major questions or concerns that you might have about low T.

In my case, I started to see various symptoms when I was in my mid-30s, including noticeably lower sex drive, depression and anxiety, my mental sharpness seemed to decrease a bit, I gained weight, but the worst part was fatigue. I found that my energy levels by the end of each day were very low and I started to drink coffee and seek out vitamins and other remedies for the first time. All of this happened over a period of time so I thought maybe it was just natural effects of aging but I did talk to my doctor several times. He ran a battery of tests including thyroid, diabetes, etc. But never thought to look at testosterone. I did seem to get a bit of relief from some acupuncture treatments as well as vitamins (especially B vitamins) but the underlying problem was still there. My wife in the meantime was reaching her sexual peak, her own hormonal changes were causing her to be a lot more interested in sex, whereas my desire and energy was lower, which wasn’t the best combination!

Because of weight gain I started to exercise and lift weights more in the last couple of years and I also noticed that my muscle gain plateaued quickly and no matter how hard I tried I didn’t seem to be able to advance any further with muscle gains. I started thinking maybe it was related to age and lower T so I also tried various natural supplements to increase testosterone, including Maca, Longjack, horny goat weed, Tribulus, but none of them seemed to make any difference. After doing some more reading I finally came across Dr. Morgantaler’s book and it was like a big lightbulb went on.

So last summer I went to see my doctor and convinced her to run some tests. My original doctor retired and my new doctor is quite open minded. I made sure to get the “free testosterone” test recommended by Dr. Morgantaler as opposed to the “Total T” test that most labs do. Lo and behold it came back that my free T levels were quite low. My doctor was quite impressed that I had diagnosed this myself and I think she has also learned a lot in the process. My doctor prescribed Testim gel very day to bring my T levels up to normal and it has made a huge difference in my health and quality of life. Almost immediately I noticed improvement but it took about two months to fully experience health benefits, including weight loss, increased muscle mass, better mental health and sharpness, improved libido and best of all much higher energy levels. I actually had to stop drinking coffee because it now keeps me awake at night even if I only drink 2 cups in the morning. In many ways I feel like I am 20 years younger.

At this point you are probably asking yourself what about some of the risks of T? First off, most of the stuff you have heard about T is probably wrong, including some of the information about prostate cancer, enlarged prostate, risk of heart attack etc. There is a lot of mis-information on this subject and Dr. Morgantaler’s book talks about all these subjects. There is actually a lot of evidence that low or decreasing T has more health risks than a normal T level. Also, this is about bringing your T levels up to normal, not taking large doses like a bodybuilder.

I do take some of the info in this book with a grain of salt since some of it is based on his own (extensive) experience and observations but he’s very good about explaining the scientific literature and what has actually been documented. But for me, my health and quality of life has improved dramatically.

Elduderno thanks for the info. What is Testim gel? I also just want my test to be normal not super high or anything. I’m 22 and I experienced a lot of the symptoms like low sex drive, fatigue and such. You alread know that with any form of ED comes depression and anxiety which is also what I’ve experienced. My sex drive s slowly improving and so are my erections but I feel like at 22 my erections should look like I’m on viagra or something like they used to be 2 years ago. Is testim gel like a temporary thing or are you on it for life?

Testim gel is slow release testosterone that you put on your skin to boost your natural T, you need a prescription. You mention that you are slowly improving so I doubt you have low T. But a blood test from your doctor would indicate your levels. Just be careful because as I mentioned most doctors don’t know much about it. If you have normal T levels and you take supplemental T it will reduce your natural production.

At this point I am not sure if I will take it for the rest of my life but I know that if I stop the original symptoms will return. There are health benefits to maintaining your T levels into old age.

O ok that makes sense. To be honest I think it’sjust thatmy estrogen is high which iswhy I’m experiencing this stuff. I’m taking an OTC supplement called PES Erase to suppress estrogen and boost test. I heard great things about it from various sources. I think once I drop from 17% to about 10-12% bodyfat my levels of test would improve. I made great changes to my diet adding foods that help the production of testosterone so diet is in check.

Nonsense! OP get your test level checked along with sex hormone binding globulin level checked, this will help you calculate your FREE testosterone, all that matters. Doc can check your estrogen level too. Even if you’re in the “normal” range if you’re symptomatic on the low to mid side of what is considered “normal” you can get treatment.

Treatment can be the form of medications that will enhance your natural testosterone production, such as HCG, it can also be combined with testosterone shots. If you have low testosterone now, it will only get worse, this is a quality of life issue.

Unfortunately many people have been brainwashed into believing testosterone is evil, hence the “low T” commercials, it’s a dirty word in pop culture. Don’t be afraid to seek treatment, testosterone doesn’t age you, in fact low testosterone will age you and cause you unwanted health problems!

Visit a wellness doctor, they’ll get you checked and give you all the information that you need. This is a quality of life issue.

My goal is to be the best me, mind, body and soul, PE is part of achieving the best me.

I will definitely get my free testosterone levels checked. But I will wait until the summer and see how much I improve. I seems to be on the road to recovery as of now. Erections are slowly coming back. I corrected my problem in the gym of overtraining(which I know was the cause). But I am going to get my free testosterone checked soon. Hopefully they do stuff like that at the medical center on my college campus.

I would ONLY consider testosterone meds after I get to 10-12% bodyfat and the problem persists for over a year after that which I hope doesn’t happen. Seems like my improved diet and limiting sets in the gym is helping it improve.
