Safety is up to the practitioner. It is easy to be safe and succeed. Anything you understand can be done safely. Learn about whatever it is then proceed with caution and anything can be safe.

This is too subjective. The purported optimum “big but not too big for most” size is 7.5”x5.5” and I would hazard 7”x5” is more versatile.
However, I am the wrong person to ask. I like getting bigger and I’m biased.
