Increasing smooth muscle mass in the penis
There is a study around which has been quoted by others which has shown on cadaveric studies that young men have a little over 50 % smooth muscle mass n the penis and as we grow old our smooth muscle mass goes down to 30 %. Related to the loss of smooth muscle is a loss of erectile strength. It has been suggested that a sufficient amount of smooth mucle mass is essential for optimal erectile quality.
The problem is that we have little knowledge about how to increase smooth muscle mass. While it is easy to exercise skeletal muscle mass (bulbospongiosus and ischiocavernosus muscle by kegels) there is a hypothesis in the scientific world that the body practices smooth muscle during spontaneous nocturnal erections. They occur at the end of the REM sleep phase, approximately per night, the first 20 seconds after the first REM phase, the last 90 seconds after the last REM phase.
Aging man not only loose muscle mass and erectile strength but also experience less and less intense nucturnal erections.
One rather new approach to treat erectile dysfunction was to administer viagra every evening before going to sleep during one year. Erectile quality improved during that year, and persisted several months after discontinuation of viagra.
It was postulated that this was a result of increased smooth muscle mass.
This approach could be useful for those pe’ers who believe that an increase in smooth muscle mass is the basis, or essential for penis growth.
