It wouldn’t really be that much more work. You gotta read/skim the threads anyway, so just hit the rating before you move on- but it should get a 3 if you don’t think it deserves inclusion, as others may disagree and give it a five- so it evens out to 4. I know it is not that simple, but it illustrates my point :)

Actually, it is that simple. The ratings are averaged. Three votes of “five stars” and one vote of “four stars” will drop the thread down to four stars, as it averages out to less than five.

memento, I do not have a way to tell who voted on each thread.

Particularly like ‘covered better elsewhere’ but whether I can remember whether its covered better elsewhere or not is another question.

I would suggest we move out of this thread if you feel the mechanics are ironed out. You may want to start a new thread entitled ‘looking for volunteers’ or something like that, then explain what we are doing, and how to do it as far as mechanics are concerned. This thread is getting quite long and your volunteers may be in ‘skim mode’ by the time they see you would like to get some recruits. Just a thought :)

I just think this was basically a discussion that moved a general idea that has been batted around a bit on these forums in the past couple of months forward into something much more specific. I, for one, am glad you are finally coming around :)

Now that you have an idea of what you think may work, you need a repost that outlines all this as succinctly as possible. After describing the project, ask for volunteers. Hopefully the new thread won’t get too far off topic, and even if it does it is easy to get it back on topic.

Ideally, you just have a bunch of guys log in and tell you they are in, and they may ask a pertinent question or two that may even further refine the project, and when you have enough guys it becomes a go.

I was hoping for a few of the moderators and some of the longtimers to give their opinions on this first. The more input we have, the better the thing will turn out I think.

And are we really sure we want to rate ALL the threads?? The Main and Hanger’s Forums have a hell of a lot of threads in them.

As you know- a lot of the longtimers just skip over non-specific thread topics looking for things that interest them, do you have the ability to change the title if it’s OK with bbs? For the mods, you can just post in the mod forum asking for input, right?

I can’t think of anything different for ‘covered better elsewhere’, unless you put ‘fair’ or ‘below average’ or ‘lacks sufficient depth’

You would be surprised how often that title gets used in multiplayer gaming rooms :) The title could be ‘Need your input for a best posts forum’ or something like that. Also, if it is OK with bbs it should show you as the thread starter. I think you will get more views and input just because it shows that you are seriously involved in looking at this- plus I rarely skip over a thread you have started for some reason :)

Actually bbs had his post at the top of this thread in another thread in the Hanger’s Forum and I split it off. I can change the title, but not the thread originator.

What exactly do we want to accomplish by determining the best posts? I ask because the best posts section at PE Forums isn’t particularly useful for finding answers, though it is good for browsing.

I like the format of the Injuries forum here. It is broken down by topic and contains links to threads with more information. Should we do something similar in a best posts forum?

BTW, the sort by rating function isn’t available in search results. Bummer.

I tried the sort in the search function a couple of days ago. It is a shame it doesn’t work there. Maybe that will be an option in the next version of the software.

I was thinking of just making a copy of any post deemed “best” in a seperate forum. Or the option exists to make a “best posts” sub-forum for each forum, like a Best Posts Hanger’s and a Best Post Main.

Boardlurker put a lot of work into the Injuries Forum and I am not sure that most guys even bother to use it, judging by the questions that get posted there. Maybe it does and the ones who find their answers, don’t bother posting a question?? Not sure though.
