I haven’t thoroughly reviewed the Brain On Porn site yet, but from the reading I’ve done there were a few parts that really seemed questionable. There are some arguments being made here that make sense as motivations to give up porn. If some persons are having difficulty becoming sexually aroused with a partner/partners who aren’t as physically attractive to them as the porn stars they’ve gotten used to, or some persons are having difficultly becoming aroused with a steady partner when they’ve become accustomed to variety on demand; I can understand people who would decide (if they were experiencing this arousal problem) that giving up the frequent pleasure and excitement of the type of masturbation they’ve been enjoying, in order to perform better in bed is a good exchange. That’s the sort of scenario where this porn detox thing would make sense to me. Or for people who masturbate so ceaselessly that it’s getting them into trouble. I also can see certain types of porn being bad for certain people. A guy who feels bad about his penis is probably not helping himself by spending a lot of time watching men do fun things with their better penis while women are enjoying it greatly (faked or not faked). A young impressionable person probably does not have his future character improved by watching porn that is unkind to one person or another. etc.
However a lot of the testimonials fall into categories of: “I always felt bad about it when I masturbated, so I’m glad I’ve stopped”. To me that sounds like the problem isn’t that you masturbate, but that you feel bad about it. Or people who feel that they aren’t as manly as they should be, or that they aren’t good enough at attracting girls, and seem very ready to accept the idea that that is because they masturbate.
I don’t reject the idea that the average man would be better off if he removed porn from his life, though it does seem unlikely to me. I haven’t looked into the idea enough to come to any conclusions on that, but there are definitely some arguments (like those I just listed) that really don’t seem very compelling to me. If it’s true that casual porn consumption is a problem, then that’s a truth worth knowing, and it would probably do me good if someone here were to convince me of it. Right now it seems to me that masturbation is a way for a man to have some enjoyment, reduce stress etc. Adding pornography to it seems like a way to make it a little more enjoyable. Does it make mental fantasizing and visualization harder or less exciting? Probably. Is that important? It seems very likely to me that most people experience withdrawal when this thing they enjoy goes away, but that to me is not an indication that a thing is bad, we all prefer not to have things we enjoy stop.
