The girth appearance

Why does a black dildo look more massive than an erected dick of same dimension?
Is it the color or the venousity (is that a proper English word?).

I bought this dildo to my wife
and was first so intimidated by the shop’s claim of a 5.5 cm diameter that I didn’t measure it.
Later I measured it to “only” 14 cm = 5.5” in girth. Being myself at 5.1” EG I couldn’t believe my eyes that 0.4” in girth could make such a difference.
After all it is only like 3 mm difference in diameter (sorry for swinging between units).

So I decided to make two paper rolls, one with my current stat 6” * 5.1” and one in my first target size: 7” * 5.5”.
I wasn’t that impressed by the 7” * 5.5” paper roll, and still if I hold it against the dildo it is the same width/girth!
What is it that makes the difference?

Should I paint my dick all black :)

0.5” girth makes a huge visual difference to me.

When I went from 5.5” to 6.0”, fuck yeah!

Girth is what makes a cock look huge. Not sure about the color effect.

Small differences in girth makes a lot of difference in visual impression, physical feel of weight and her response. I went rather quickly from 5.6 to 5.9 cylindrical shape, it looks and feels huge to me compared to before and she is not exactly complaining… :) Too bad you can’t trust them on the dildo measures… how hard is it to get right? Regarding color, you can see if it makes a difference with a black condom although the result is not really black. I chose one of those bunny-style dildos for my woman btw, I was not sure I wanted her to get spoiled by the huge black ones so I settled for 5 inch girth and 5 inch penetrating length. The were right about the measures this time. Extremely effective design! ;)

Thats 10mm diff not 3mm almost a 1/2” that is a huge diff.

Sorry pabs but Oden said 3 mm difference in diameter that’s about 10 mm in girth. He didn’t make it easy on us using both US and metric units and both girth and diameter measurements :)

Girth does increase the volume most of all so it should look bigger!

There is something about darker colors that light does not drown out when reflecting off of it. I notice this every summer when I “fake bake”. My face, my body, always look more appealing, defined and healthy when I have a nice tan. I think there is a scientific term for this phenomena, but I can’t quite remember it.

Aha, so the old tale about blacks having bigger… is just a visual effect?
Their stats isn’t bigger but they look bigger!

Yeah, I’m sorry for that. Since EG is most often discussed in inches I used that for girth, but since I am more familiar with mm than fractions of inches I used that to actually visualize diameter differences.
After all, who knows directly what is bigger 13/14” or 15/16”. I understand that you have learnt the relevant fractions 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and multiples of those and know how big they are and in what order they come, but for us metric guys it is a mess. Decimal and metric is so much simpler.

And the reason for comparing diameter instead of circumference (girth) is of course that we see diameter not circumference. Hence, a diff of 1/2” = 1.27 cm is approx a 4 mm (1/6”) diff in diameter.

You are right that a penis that isn’t very circular won’t follow the simple rule girth = pi * diameter exactly.
However, even so, you cannot “see” circumference, you see the two-dimensional projection of the penis which is approx the same as the diameter.

And how would you measure your diameter?

Something like diam = (h + w)/2
The average of the height and width.

Actually what I originally was after is how much wider the penis becomes when increasing the girth with e.g 1/2”. In that case it may be that the width increases with 4.5mm while the height only increases with 3.7mm, but that is really not that important. What is important is that I may visualize what 3-4mm more in diameter (or cross section with or height) looks like. I cannot visualize what 1/2” more in circumference looks like (without doing the circumference-diameter conversion).

What she feels is circumference; how much she can grip around it, if her fingers meet the thumb or not, how much she needs to open her mouth, etc. My guess is that diameter is an irrelevant measure for girls especially since the shape very seldom is perfectly circular.
