Role of NSAIDs in Hanging

Role of NSAIDs in Hanging

NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), like Advil, Aspirin, and Celebrex, all suppress the inflammatory response.

If I understand what I’ve been reading, inflammation of connective tissues causes them to heal.

So, what if you take NSAIDS? Do you delay or impair healing? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

For instance, it is generally advisable to reach “fatigue” while hanging at as light a weight as you can. If NSAIDs impair connective tissue healing, taking a healthy dose of them may help you to fatigue at a lighter weight. Also, by postponing healing, you may be able to get a better, more permanent stretch at any weight.

NSAIDS may also help people whose connective tissues have become tough from over conditioning. They may have an important role in de-conditioning …

This is just me spouting off. I’m not a medical expert by any “stretch.” But, I’m sure there are lots of biological short cuts to achieving good gains if we look for them.

Does anybody have any ideas/experience with this?

BTW: Here’s the website that prompted this idea:

Interesting, I made decent gains from hanging while doing things evil to the healing process. I smoke 1 1/2 packs a day, drink 2 pots of coffee daily, ate unhealthy until recently, never took any multi vitamins until recently, I also regularly take aspirin and ibuprofen. This could also explain why girth gains haven’t been so generous to me, although admittedly I really don’t do much for girth other than light jelqing and a few squeezes.

The bad part about taking NSAIDS is supposed to be the more you take them, the less they work for you. The ‘ailment’ you are treating for becomes acclimated and won’t respond to treatment later.

I think healing faster would be better because it will heal while the tissues are still stretched out, rather than after they have tighten back up over time.

Successful PE probably depends upon a balance of breaking down and healing. Maybe NSAIDS can change this balance, maybe not.

I hear people talk about keeping their ligs and tunica in a constant state of fatigue. This may be easier to achieve if healing can be delayed until after some significant tissue breakdown occurs.

You have probably been reading the same site I read. In which case if the NSAIDS do indeed retard healing and you combine that effect with an ADS that keeps the ligs pulled at all times even just a little then the gains should reflect the success of that process. That basicly is what I’ve been practicing and my gains have been very consistent with sporadic hanging sessions but constant golf weight (i.e. peweight) utilization. What I think occurs is the micro fracturing of the ligs on occasion and mind you I also don’t believe that daily hanging is better, followed by ADS of light tugging combined with NSAIDS keeps things in a constant prehealing process. If you allow a period of time where healing can complete then you must over come that healing by micro-fracturing again but now you must hang heavier due to increased strength in the ligs. This is not to mention a shortening of the lig during the last phase of the healing process where the body tries to return the lig to its previous permanent length.

The guessing game here is the differences between everyones healing rate. How long can I go with no hanging whatsoever (even ADS) and not experience a complete healing. I’m convinced that when a guy plateaus, it is because that enough time has passed that the healing took place and now his ligs are stronger and hence no micro-fracturing can or does occur unless a larger weight is used to start the process over again. but mind you afterwards you will need to use that heavier weight again unless you allow a deconditioning period, maybe three months or more. Then start again with lighter weights.

BTW I take an aspirin a day. and my heaving hanging is between 8 and 12lbs. I hang 2 lbs of peweights All day. I used to use 3 lbs but have found it unnecessary. I do heavy hang over 14lbs on occasion but its when I feel that the lower weight is not giving me fatigue, but that is not very often.

I just came across this interesting article, which discusses the role of NSAIDS in muscle building. I believe the information here is readily transferrable to PE, especially because the article focuses on connective tissue:

Here’s an excerpt:

While non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin may exert a ‘braking’ effect on inflammation and pain, keep in mind that inflammation is a necessary part of the repair phase following a connective tissue injury. Some forms of mild pain can be a good thing, such as second-day muscle soreness from a hard workout.

A few studies have recently demonstrated that NSAIDs may inhibit protein synthesis in exercised muscle. However, this does not necessarily mean that these drugs will inhibit muscle growth following your workouts.

Dr. Claude Cote, one of the leading researchers on the matter of NSAIDs and inflammation told me that his view is that NSAIDs, that are strong enough to really inhibit inflammatory cell infiltration and activity, can also repress cellular and molecular mechanisms necessary for repair after damage. And, this is part of a hypertrophy response from training. However, he says, NSAIDs theoretically inhibiting muscle growth would only be in a case where these drugs are taken in higher doses for long periods. He suspects aspirin would not do it because it works with a different mechanism of action from a classic NSAID. He suggests that the theory would require highly controlled experimental protocols with human subjects.

I’ve been reading up on bone lengthening, hoping to glean some information applicable to PE. One interesting factoid I’ve come across is that NSAIDS are generally not prescribed to patients having bone lengthening procedures. NSAIDS have been shown to impair bone growth (bone is a form of connective tissue, as are ligaments, fascia, and tunica).

Dear Alice,

I hate you and get out.

Just kidding.

You all are still missing the point... The story was great and all but should have ass (and) some anal in it.- RWG

I just came upon this article while looking for something else. Here, NSAIDs were found to have effect on healing of rabbit ligaments:

Quote
NSAID treatment following ligament injury produces ligaments with similar high and low load properties as untreated ligaments. This work suggests that NSAIDs have no inhibitory effects on ligament healing. As NSAIDs are effective analgesics and will provide patients with pain relief following injury, this data supports their use as part of the treatment regimen following acute ligament injury.
