How does the CTC plug into your machine? Does it use a serial cable or a USB? If you’re using a USB port, there are two different types of USB ports. The new version (v3.0, I think) uses a faster clock rate that may not be supported by the CTC. If you look up on your laptop manual, there may be both types of USB ports available - if that’s the case, you might try to find a slower USB port and see if it works.
Another idea: would CTC send you a disk? Those machines are pretty expensive, and if he’s nice, he might be willing to mail you an disc. Or he might give you a clue about what machines the software works on, and which ones it fails, and why.
Another idea: can you try the CTC software on another machine? Perhaps a friend has an old desktop that you could borrow and test the software on that. Or you might be able to find an old, used desktop computer (Win XP? Win 2000?) for very little, and use it only to drive your CTC machine.
