Vacuum is the absence of pressure. When you use the vac pump you are increasing vacuum (reducing the pressure) inside of the cylinder. Common measurement for vacuum is inHg, shown on the outside of your gauge dial, and mmHg on the inside of your gauge dial.
As vacuum is a reduction in pressure, the accurate measurement is negative inHg, which your gauge shows as -5, -10, etc. Around here we are usually ignore the negative and just say pump to the vacuum gauge reads between 3 and 5 inHg. For our purposes ignoring the negative is ok. When you go to work for NASA don’t forget the negative sign on your vacuum measurements. Negative sign is important for SpaceX also. Just not so much for dick pumping.
The black band on your gauge covers the vacuum range of 0 to -5, or commonly called 0 to 5. Three is the third tic mark from 0 in the black band. Should be just a few pumps to get there.
The green band covers the vacuum range from -5 to -15.
The red band covers the vacuum range from -15 to -30. Avoid exposing your dick to vacuum levels in the red band area.
