Soy Debate Experiment

I am a pretty big consumer of soy. I drink a considerable amount of soy milk each day in my whey protein shakes because I’m lactose intolerant. I often eat soy enriched protein bars. I drink lots of fruit smoothies with soy protein. After reading about the effects on testosterone, I’m beginning to wonder whether I’m interfering with my PE gains, bodybuilding, and libido.

For the next month I plan to cut soy out completely. I’ll report back the results. Any others have experience with this?

Considering the way your body looks , I don’t think soy interfered with your testosterone production.

Yeah no shit…and change your friggin Avatar…I don’t need you waving those abs in my face to remind me how out of shape I AM!

Can’t you put up some hot stripper like everyone else?

Seriously though (actually I am), if you cut out all dairy and just have low glycemic veggies for carbs, and lean animal proteins (no starches,or sugar) you would get shredded in about 3 weeks. Thats all we need, for you to look better!
You don’t even have the decency to have a small dick!

There is quite a bit of evidence of estrogen like effects of soy, but really, it sure doesn’t look like its effecting you at all…bastard!

LOL @ my avatar, sparkyx. Well, all I can say is that I’m trying to stay lean as lean as possible as I get older. Believe it or not, I’m definitely not as cut as I was five years ago. Some of the body change is probably due to me getting older, but I think it might also be due to the fact that it was about five years ago that I started adding large amounts of soy to my diet. My libido, while “normal,” also isn’t as raging as it used to be. I used to get hardons if the wind blew too hard. Now I have to be in the mood or I have to manually stimulate the unit. Just a theory…but I do feel fortunate to have the genes I do.

Well what is the threshold for negative feedback on this?

Off the top of my head, the only soy I consume would be in mayonnaise, blue cheese dressing, and low card snack bar.

I am still looking, but so far it doesn’t look good for soy consumption:

Like I said, I don’t consume it purposely. But after reading some of this stuff, I am wondering if it is possible to avoid the stuff, it is in a lot of products.

I’ll see what else I can find.

Brian,

According to this article your diet may be way above what is a reasonable amount of soy consumption.

spark,

Does it seem like you have gained body fat as your consumption increased?

Brian

Laying off the soy ain’t going to hurt but I can’t imagine you being in any better shape:)

I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work. Thomas Edison (1847-1931)

Thanks, guys, for the stroking my ego re: my physique, lol. But I’m definitely concerned about all the evidence suggesting that too much soy may interfere with normal hormone production, particularly for males. Testosterone production will decline as we age anyway. Why speed up the process with soy?

It’s only been a few days since I quit soy, and I can’t believe how hard it is to avoid the stuff. It’s in everything! Certainly most of the high-protein snacks I’ve relied on since I began bodybuilding. That said, I’ve managed to stick with the whey products. It’s probably too early to tell, but if today’s PE session was any indication, my libido’s certainly gotten a little boost, lol. It was quite intense and I didn’t really want to stop! We’ll see. I’ll report back.

Damn. My ignorance lead me to believe that “Soy” and “Soya” were distinguishable. Damn.

I enjoy frying frozen veggies in Soy/Soya sauce. I thought that the only problem was the salt content.

I suppose that it’s better than my steak and beer diet

That`s the placebo effect.

Maybe you’re right. I guess I’ll find out in time…

I have heard that phytoestrogens in soy can act as estrogen blockers by taking up receptors that would be occupied by more potent real estrogen.

When looking for balanced information on this, it is not good to just google “negative effects”.

I think that too much of most things can have bad consequences, but moderate intakes shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Soy is healthy food and reduces cholesterol.

Your experiment is interesting. I wonder if it will be possible to notice any change.
