What exactly is the right way to measure? I’m never sure if I should be standing up or sitting down, and which way I should have my dick pointed. Anyone want to shed some light on this for me?

It doesn’t matter whether you stand up, sit down, or bend over while measuring… The only thing that matters is you measure the same way consistently. This eliminates a chance of your gains being caused by a change in the way you measured.
