The subconscious does not have the same ability as the conscious to differentiate. If it sinks into your subconscious that you are terrified of harmless house spiders, you will be terrified of spiders even if your conscious mind knows it’s irrational. You will act and respond to your subconscious programming.
The mind is like an iceberg - nine tenths of it is the subconscious which is ‘under the water’ and a tenth, the bit you ‘see’ is the conscious above the water. The foundation of who and what we are is the subconscious, which is being programmed every minute of every day. It is at work even while we sleep.
If your father shouts at your mother when you are a child, or you are bullied at school, or you get rejected by the girl you fancy most as a teenager, it will affect your subconscious programming- you can’t stop that happening.
But you can reprogram your subconscious with repetition of what you want to believe. As long as you choose positive messages and don’t reinforce negative beliefs (which is what most folk spend much of their lives doing to their subconscious minds) you can make huge positive changes to your beliefs, to the foundation of who you are, which you will act on.
Use that subconscious gullibility positively and choose what to feed it. Every minute of your life is already programming it anyway! Ultimately it’s a survival mechanism so it focuses on negatives and that’s a bad thing outside of a genuine survival situation - you end up with irrational or negative reactions to situations where they are not necessary - learning to positively manipulate your subconscious is one of the most valuable skills you will ever learn.
Even if you choose not to use it for PE, you can use it to take control of your life and stop being a victim of your life circumstances.
