L-Arginine

L-arginine is a non-essential amino acid, naturally occurring in certain pulses and fruit. It serves many important functions in the body, helping to regulate the immune system and liver, and facilitating increase in muscle mass whilst reducing body fat. It also forms Nitric Oxide, an essential requirement for sexual function in both sexes. It has a strong reputation for enhancing erections in men and increasing orgasmic response in women.

Nitic Oxide dilates arteries and regulates cell function throughout the body. Increased production improves circulation to the body’s vital organs, including heart, brain and sexual organs. Nitric Oxide is also a compound naturally produced in the blood vessels which helps to maintain the blood flow and delivery of oxygen throughout the entire body.

Positive Effects

  • Precursor for the synthesis of Nitric Oxide
  • Stimulation of the release of HGH and insulin.
  • Improves immune function.
  • Assists in neutralizing ammonia in the liver.
  • Regulates the activity of the thymus gland.
  • Stabilization of blood pressure.

Possible Side Effects
  • Nausea reported at high does.
  • HGH related side effects.

Pharmacology
When ingested, L-Arginine is delivered into the blood stream and can pass through the blood-brain barrier, after which it serves to stimulate the pituitary gland to release HGH. L-Arginine is also a direct precursor to the potent Nitric Oxide.

The “L” in the name is representative of the chemical structure, which is that the backbone is oriented amino(left) to carboxy(right).

The category of HGH products using amino acids is called “secretagogues,” which stimulate the pituitary gland to produce HGH. Studies show that certain amino acid combinations such as L-lysine and L-arginine, L-ornithine and L-glutamine can stimulate pituitary HGH.

Dosage
L-arginine is usually well tolerated in doses as high as 3000 to 6000 mg per day. A dosage of 3000 to 4000 mg daily is needed for the growth hormone effect.

L-arginine may be taken in combination with L-Ornithine or L-lysine. If taken twice a day a quantity of 500 to 1000 mg of each is acceptable. Alternately it may be taken before bed at a larger dose of 1000 to 1500 mg of each.

Drug Interactions and Warnings
Since L-Arginine is an amino acid, there are no known drug interactions. The combination of L-Ornithine has been shown to increase the release of HGH and increase Nitric Oxide.

L-Ornithine has been shown to potentate the actions of L-Arginine. L-Ornithine can also be metabolized into L-Arginine.

Do not take L-Arginine if you suffer from herpes or cancer. L-Arginine has been shown to increase the intensity of herpes outbreaks and HGH has been shown to grow cancerous tumors.

L-Arginine may have positive effects on conditions that supress the immune system such as AIDS.

If you have diabetes, please contact your doctor before trying L-Arginine.

Recommendations for Use
To improve male fertility, a dosage of 2 grams twice daily is suggested. Depending on if there is a deficiency of L-Arginine, the benefits may not be immediately seen. Benefits from this supplement may be experienced in as little as one week.

L-Arginine occurs naturally at low level in whole-wheat, rice, nuts, seeds, corn, soy, grapes, coco, and carob amongst other sources.

There are no long term side effects from supplementing L-Arginine. Therefore it can be used indefinitely.

Yohimbe
Yohimbe originates from the inner bark of the West African tree Corynanthe Yohimbea. Indigenous peoples have used Yohimbe to enhance sexual prowess and pleasure for many generations. Mainstream medicine has recognised this and it is now commonly in use as an aphrodisiac.

Yohimbe is one of the best performing herbal aphrodisiacs which, prior to the introduction of, was the only substance approved in the US by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction.

Yohimbine is the pharmaceutical extract of the active substance from Yohimbe.

Positive Effects

  • Aphrodisiac for both sexes
  • Fights male impotency
  • Powerful antioxidant
  • Increases energy
Possible Side Effects
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Sleeplessness.
  • Anxiety, dizziness, headaches or nausea.
  • Raised body temperature and sweating.

Pharmacology
Yohimbe expands the blood vessels in the extremities of the body including the genitals (similar to the prescription drug Viagra), skin and even fat cells. It acts as an alpha adrenoreceptor blocker reducing the effect of hormones that cause constriction of blood vessels, which typically increases as we age. Yohimbe particularly aids blood flow to the corpus cavernosa to more readily engorge the penis. Yohimbe concurrently increases the body’s production of norepinephrine which is essential to the formation of erections and steps up adrenaline to nerve endings which enhance sexual stimulation.

At high doses, Yohimbe is a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. MAO metabolizes serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. By inhibiting this, MAOIs increase levels of those neurotransmitters.

Dosage
Although there are no standard accepted dosage recommendations for yohimbe, it is known that more than 40mg per day can result in adverse side effects. Typical daily amounts claimed by commercial supplements are between 10-30mg though this may indicate the alkaloid content rather than the standardized yohimbine content.

Drug Interactions and Warnings
Yohimbe should not be taken if you suffer from any of the following: Kidney disease, diabetes, glaucoma, abnormal blood pressure, irregular blood sugar, psychological disorders, history of gastric or duodenal ulcers.

Yohimbe should not be taken with tranquilizers, anti-depressants, sedatives, amphetamines, antihistamines, narcotics such as cocaine or significant amounts of alcohol. Being a stimulant itself, use caution when adding any other stimulant class drugs or herbs. Substances the increase heart rate may also interact with Yohimbe.

At high doses, Yohimbe can act as a MAO inhibitor and can cause serious adverse effects when taken concomitantly with tyramine-containing foods (e.g. liver, cheeses, red wine) or with over the counter products containing phenylpropanolamine, such as nasal decongestants and diet aids. Individuals taking yohimbe should be warned to avoid these foods and OTC products because of the increased likelihood of adverse effects.

Recommendations for Use
Yohimbe is a powerful stimulant and should be treated as such. Daily intake is not recommended. Yohimbe Should be used up to an hour before expected sexual encounter. Continuous use for a period exceeding one week carries a significant risk. At a low dosage, it is relatively safe to use and will show immediate results.

Initially a small dose should be taken, due to the stimulant nature usage may be intolerable to some. Discontinue usage if any side effect becomes overly noticable.

Horny Goat Weed

General Information
Horny goat weed was first written about in ancient classical Chinese medical texts and has been used by the Chinese for over 2,000 years. In China, Horny Goat Weed is referred to as Ying Yang Huo, which loosely translated means “licentious goat plant”. The traditional use of this plant is for disorders of the kidneys, joints, liver, back and knees. Today, it is more commonly used to increase libido and sexual pleasure in individuals from Western civilizations.

Positive Effects

  • Increased Libido in both sexes.
  • Controls excessive cortisol production.
  • Increased Testosterone production.
  • Promotes energy.
  • Treatment for impotency.
  • Increased semen production.

Possible Side Effects
  • Possible Alopecia via increased testosterone production.

Pharmacology
Horny goat weed comes from the plant Epimedium. Epimedium is a genus of many related plant species and some are used for medicinal purposes, including Epimedium sagittatum, Epimedium brevicornum, and Epimedium koreanum. Epimedium is a leaf-enriched plant, which grows abundantly at high altitudes. The plant was named Epimedium because it is similar to a plant found in the ancient Asian kingdom of Media, now a part of Iran. The leaves of the plant contain a variety of flavonoids, polysaccharides, sterols and an alkaloid called magnaflorine.

There is some conflict among medical studies on exactly how Epimedium effects the body. In recent studies, it was shown to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Other studies have shown this plant to control the production of cortisol. In trials using rats, Epimedium has been shown to cause a marked increase in testosterone production. This plant could very well have all of the afore mentioned effects.

Dosage
The ideal dosage of Horny Goat Weed is not known, but may range from 1 to 3 grams per day. It comes in both pill and powder form. The pill form normally is sold in 500-750 milligram capsules.

The traditional use of horny goat weed is as a hot-water tea-like concoction, which results in a different set of active elements when compared to the alcohol extracts that are more commonly used in commercial products. It is difficult to know which form is best suited as an aphrodisiac.

Drug Interactions and Warnings
There are no reported drug interactions. With the increase in testosterone, it is not recommended for those with cancer.

Recommendations for Use
Horny Goat Weed should reach full effectiveness with in one week. In some, the increase in libido can be experienced with the first dose, although this is uncommon. With no reported drug interactions or side effects, it would seem ideal for those wishing to increase their libido and sexual performance.

Notes

AchE inhibitors are used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease due to their ability to increase memory.

Cortisol is known as the stress hormone. During times of increased stress or extreme physical exercises, this hormone is released and actually metabolizes tissue such a skeletal muscle for the purpose of creating sufficient energy.

Tongkat Ali

General Information
Tongkat Ali has gained fame as a symbol of manhood by the Malaysian men because it increases male virility and sexual exploits. In Malaysia and Indonesia its known as Pasak Bumi which means "Ali’s staff or walking stick" in reference to its effects on the male sexual response.

This plant has recently been placed on the protected plants list in Malaysia. Forest rangers guard areas in the Malaysian jungles where the plant still can be found in an attempt to stop the unlicensed harvesting.

Positive Effects

  • Powerful aphrodisiac
  • Increased testosterone production
  • General sense of well-being
  • Enhanced erection strength
  • Increased energy levels
  • Treatment for Malaria
Possible Side Effects
  • Insomnia
  • Reports of high lead content in shipments from Maylasia
  • Increased irritability and aggression in some
Pharmacology
Tongkat ali, also known as Eurycoma longifolia Jack, has been tested for many years now to treat a number of illnesses ranging from Malaria to cancer. In studies done in vitro, it has shown some affinity for inhibiting the activation of the tumor promoter-induced Epstein-Barr virus which infects nearly 95% of the worlds population.

Eurycoma longifolia Jack is thought to stimulate the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) which causes the Leydig Cells to secrete testosterone. Little information is available on the mechanisms involved with the noted spike in testosterone production. Testosterone has been linked to libido in both sexes.

In an unpublished study, it was shown to lower Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), thereby increasing the amount of free testosterone. This study, being unpublished, may not come from a reputable source.

Dosage
Tongkat ali is differentiated by a root to extract ratio. The more popular ratio’s are 50 parts of root to create 1 part of root extract (50:1) and 100 parts root to create 1 part of root extract (100:1) but there are many others marketed. Optimum dosage will vary because of these differences.

The highest potency available is 100:1 and should be taken at 80-100mg per day. If you have or plan to buy any other variations of tongkat, please follow the directions on the label.

Drug Interactions and Warnings
Over many centuries, men have been using this root with no reported interactions or warnings. This does not mean that it cannot interact with a medication that you are taking. Please use caution and consult a licenced physician before using Tongkat.

Recommendations for Use
The reported cases of insomnia suggest that it should be taken in the morning and not at night. The effects are reported to last the entire day and start after the first dose. As with all supplements the aren’t under any regulation laws, choose the manufacturer wisely.

Maca
General Information
Maca, or Lepidium meyenii, is grown between 4000 and 4500 m in the central Andes. It is used by indigenous peoples for its ability to increase fertility, as well as its aphrodisiac properties. It has a high nutrient value and is rich with many amino acids and minerals such as iron.

Scientific evidence suggests that the claims of increased fertility and sexual desire are substantiated, but some distributors imply that Maca increases testosterone. This has not been collaborated by any scientific study. In fact, the clinical trials of Maca show it not to influence any hormone level in the body. So the mechanism of increased sperm count and mobility, as well as its aphrodisiac qualities, are yet unknown.

Good information, Thank you for posting it all up!

I have some yohimbe in liquid form and have been taking it for about 4 weeks and still haven’t felt or seen any difference with my circulation to my vital organ.

Ill try the horny goat as well. But I have read that amino acids help with sperm production as well.

Should add Rhodida Rosea to this list, I did a lookup of it on WebMD and got this.

Supposely it’s a newer herb out there.
